Bleeding after masturbation, early menstruation?
Hello Doctor: I am 22 years old, have not had sexual intercourse, and have been masturbating for 2 to 3 years.
Last night, while using my fingers for masturbation (I had trimmed my nails and disinfected them), I experienced some dryness and slight pain when inserting two fingers.
After a few thrusts, I noticed blood on my fingers, so I quickly wiped it, thinking it was just a minor abrasion.
I then continued to stimulate my clitoris for orgasm.
This morning, I found brownish blood stains on my underwear, so I promptly cleaned my genital area with body wash, and at that time, there was no blood when I wiped with tissue.
Later, when I went out, I felt a sensation of blood flowing out, and upon going to the bathroom, I discovered fresh red blood.
After returning home, I used a sanitary pad, and again felt some blood flow, but the amount was not like a menstrual flow, and the pad was not saturated.
My menstrual cycles are as follows: 5/24-5/30, 6/25-7/2, 7/25-7/31, and they are generally regular.
Today is one week before my expected period.
I feel a slight pain in my lower abdomen, and I am unsure if it is due to anxiety, as I feel uncomfortable everywhere.
May I ask: Is this bleeding likely due to vaginal abrasion? If I am to observe it myself, how many days should I monitor? Or how many days of bleeding would warrant a visit to the doctor? This is the first time this has happened, and I had nightmares last night, waking up feeling very anxious, so I wanted to ask first.
Thank you for your response 🙏🙏🙏 Update: This afternoon, when I went to the bathroom and wiped with tissue, I noticed mucus mixed with blood.
Does this mean my period is starting early?

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause bleeding outside of menstruation are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is recommended that if the bleeding persists or worsens, you should consult a gynecologist to investigate the cause.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.

It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning situation with unexpected bleeding after masturbation, and it's understandable to feel anxious about it. Let's break down the potential causes and what steps you should consider taking.
Firstly, the bleeding you observed could indeed be a result of vaginal irritation or minor trauma, especially since you mentioned that you experienced some dryness and slight pain during the act. The vagina is a sensitive area, and any vigorous activity, particularly if there is insufficient lubrication, can lead to small tears or abrasions. This could explain the blood you noticed on your fingers and later in your underwear.
The presence of brown blood in the morning could indicate old blood, which is often seen at the beginning or end of a menstrual cycle. The fresh red blood you observed later could be from the irritation or could potentially be related to your menstrual cycle, especially since you mentioned that you are approaching the time of your expected period.
Given that your menstrual cycles have been regular, the timing of this bleeding could suggest that your body is preparing for menstruation. However, the fact that it occurred after masturbation raises the possibility that it could be related to the activity itself.
In terms of what to do next, here are some recommendations:
1. Self-Observation: Monitor the bleeding for a few days. If it is light and gradually subsides, it may simply be a result of irritation. Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as increased pain, heavy bleeding, or any unusual discharge.
2. When to Seek Medical Attention: If the bleeding continues for more than a few days, becomes heavier, or if you experience severe pain, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. Additionally, if you notice any signs of infection (such as a foul odor, fever, or unusual discharge), you should seek medical attention promptly.
3. Avoid Irritation: In the meantime, consider avoiding any activities that may further irritate the area, including vigorous masturbation or intercourse, until you feel more comfortable.
4. Hydration and Lubrication: If you choose to engage in sexual activity or masturbation again, ensure that you are adequately lubricated to prevent further irritation. Water-based lubricants can be helpful.
5. Emotional Well-being: It’s also important to address the emotional aspect of this experience. Anxiety can exacerbate physical sensations, so practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, may help alleviate some of your discomfort.
6. Consultation for Peace of Mind: If you are feeling particularly anxious or if this situation is affecting your daily life, consider speaking with a healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and help you understand what is happening with your body.
In summary, while the bleeding could be a result of minor trauma from masturbation, it’s essential to monitor the situation closely. If it persists or worsens, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
