When can the sling for a clavicle fracture be removed?

Hello, I was in a car accident on July 16, which resulted in a fracture of my right clavicle.
According to the doctor, it is only a slight crack, so I am undergoing conservative treatment with a sling.
After a month, I returned for a follow-up, and the doctor said I could start rehabilitation exercises up to 90 degrees.
I would like to ask if the main purpose of the sling is to prevent my arm from being raised, but if I remove it, should I still avoid moving my shoulder and keep my arm hanging down? Is it safe to take off the sling under these conditions? (I’ve noticed that wearing the sling feels similar to not wearing it, as I am careful not to lift my arm.) Additionally, I would like to know if it is safe to run or do some aerobic exercises two months after a clavicle fracture.
Thank you for your response, doctor!

Typically, you should wait until healing is nearly complete before removing it.
Running may not have an impact for at least six to eight weeks, but you should avoid heavy lifting during this time.

After a clavicle fracture, the use of a sling is an important aspect of the healing process. In your case, since the fracture was described as a minor crack and you have been using a triangular sling for support, it is essential to follow your doctor's advice regarding when to remove it. Generally, the sling is used to immobilize the shoulder and prevent unnecessary movement that could hinder healing.
Typically, a sling can be removed when the doctor assesses that the fracture is stable and healing properly. Since you mentioned that your doctor allowed you to start rehabilitation exercises up to 90 degrees of shoulder elevation after one month, this is a positive sign that your fracture is progressing well. However, even after removing the sling, it is crucial to avoid any activities that could strain the shoulder, such as lifting or reaching overhead. Keeping the arm close to your body and allowing it to hang naturally is advisable during the initial recovery phase.

Regarding your question about running or engaging in aerobic exercises two months post-fracture, it largely depends on your individual healing process and the advice of your healthcare provider. Generally, light aerobic activities that do not involve significant upper body movement can be resumed once you feel comfortable and your doctor gives the green light. However, high-impact activities like running may need to be approached with caution. It is essential to listen to your body; if you experience pain or discomfort while attempting these activities, it is advisable to stop and consult your doctor.

In summary, you can likely remove the sling as per your doctor's guidance, but you should continue to avoid strenuous activities and movements that could jeopardize your recovery. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are following the best course of action for your specific situation.
In addition, it’s important to understand that during the recovery phase, you may experience some discomfort or stiffness in the shoulder. This is normal as the muscles and ligaments adjust after immobilization. Engaging in physical therapy or rehabilitation exercises, as recommended by your healthcare provider, can help restore strength and range of motion.
Lastly, if you have any concerns about your recovery or experience unusual symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or changes in sensation, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your recovery is a priority, and ensuring that you are on the right track is essential for a successful return to your normal activities.
