Menstrual issues

In June of this year, I visited a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for throat issues and took herbal medicine for a week.
My menstrual period was delayed that month, arriving only around early July (it was supposed to start in mid-June).
In August, my expected period came on July 28 and 29, but it was a very small amount of brown discharge that stopped.
It wasn't until August 19 that I experienced a small amount of brown discharge again (about one pad's worth for a day), which lasted for about 5 to 6 days (I consumed warm ginger water with brown sugar from August 22 to 24).
On the night of August 24, I suddenly experienced a large amount of bright red menstrual blood.
Is this normal? I estimate that my period may last about 10 days since this red blood came quite late.
I have always had a late sleep schedule and have consumed a lot of iced drinks and spicy/fried foods last month.

Hello, Ping Ping.
Based on your description, it seems that the use of traditional Chinese medicine has led to menstrual irregularities.
It is advisable to return for a follow-up consultation with your original TCM practitioner to discuss this matter.
Thank you.

Menstrual irregularities can be concerning and often lead to questions about underlying health issues. Based on your description, it seems that your menstrual cycle has been affected by various factors, including recent changes in your diet, lifestyle, and possibly stress. Let's break down the potential causes and concerns regarding your situation.

Firstly, menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and underlying medical conditions. In your case, the fact that you experienced a delay in your period after taking traditional Chinese medicine for a throat issue could suggest that the treatment may have impacted your hormonal balance. Herbal remedies can sometimes have unexpected effects on the menstrual cycle, particularly if they contain ingredients that influence estrogen or progesterone levels.

The irregularities you described, such as the late arrival of your period in July and the unusual flow in August, could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Imbalance: The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, and any disruption in hormone levels can lead to irregularities. Stress, weight changes, and certain medications can all contribute to hormonal fluctuations.

2. Diet and Lifestyle: You mentioned consuming a lot of iced drinks and spicy or fried foods. Diet can significantly impact menstrual health. For instance, excessive consumption of caffeine or high-fat foods can lead to hormonal imbalances. Additionally, late sleeping patterns can disrupt your circadian rhythm, which may also affect hormone production.

3. Stress: Psychological stress can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. If you've been experiencing stress, whether from work, personal life, or health concerns, it could be a contributing factor to your irregular periods.

4. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal issues can lead to irregular menstrual cycles. If your irregularities persist, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.

Regarding the specific details of your menstrual flow, the presence of brown discharge typically indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the body, which can be normal. However, the sudden onset of a heavy flow after a period of light bleeding can be concerning, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, fatigue, or significant changes in your overall health.

In conclusion, while some irregularities can be normal, especially after changes in lifestyle or health, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If your menstrual irregularities continue or worsen, or if you experience additional concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic exam, or an ultrasound to ensure that everything is functioning as it should. Keeping a menstrual diary, noting the dates, flow, and any accompanying symptoms, can also be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing any potential issues.
