Visual Distortion: Is It Eye Position or Something More? - Ophthalmology

Distorted vision?

I would like to ask the doctor, when I close my right eye and look with my left eye, I always feel that horizontal lines appear to be slanted, with the upper right being higher and the lower left being lower, but the lines are still straight.
This feeling is in comparison to my right eye.
When I close my left eye and look with my right eye, the left side appears higher and the right side lower, but the slant is less pronounced than with my left eye.
However, I still see straight lines as straight, and when looking at the Amsler grid, the lines also appear straight.
Is this due to the different positions of my eyes? Why does it appear slanted? I am very anxious about having visual distortion, and I am scared.
Is visual distortion very obvious, or is it just a slight curvature?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: This is not a distortion of vision.
The difference may be caused by the relative positions of the objects viewed by the left and right eyes.
Since the left and right eyes perceive objects from slightly different angles, they naturally appear different; however, the brain typically merges these images together.
Another possible reason could be strabismus.
In any case, it is advisable to have an eye examination.

Visual distortion can be a perplexing issue, especially when it manifests as a sensation of lines appearing slanted or warped. Your description of experiencing a diagonal distortion when using one eye while the other is closed raises several important considerations regarding visual perception, eye alignment, and potential underlying conditions.

Firstly, the phenomenon you are experiencing could indeed be related to the differences in how each eye perceives visual information. Each eye has a slightly different position and angle, which can lead to variations in how images are processed by the brain. This is known as binocular disparity, which is a normal aspect of human vision that allows for depth perception. However, when one eye is closed, the brain relies solely on the open eye, and any pre-existing discrepancies in vision between the two eyes can become more pronounced. This could explain why you perceive lines as being slanted or uneven when using one eye at a time.

The fact that you see straight lines as straight when using either eye alone, and that the Amsler grid appears normal, suggests that there may not be a significant structural issue with your retina or macula. The Amsler grid is a useful tool for detecting distortions in vision that could indicate macular degeneration or other retinal problems. Since your results are normal, it is less likely that there is a serious underlying condition affecting your vision.

However, your anxiety about visual distortion is understandable. Anxiety can exacerbate the perception of visual disturbances, leading to a heightened awareness of any discrepancies in vision. Stress and anxiety can also lead to muscle tension around the eyes, which may contribute to feelings of discomfort or distortion. It is essential to address both the physical and psychological aspects of your experience.

Regarding the question of whether visual distortion is typically significant or mild, it can vary widely among individuals. Some people may experience pronounced distortions, while others may notice only subtle changes. The key is to monitor the consistency and severity of these distortions. If they remain mild and do not worsen over time, they may be less concerning. However, if you notice a significant change in your vision or if the distortions become more pronounced, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from an eye care professional.

In summary, the sensations you are experiencing could be attributed to the differences in how each eye perceives visual information, exacerbated by anxiety and stress. It is essential to maintain regular eye examinations and communicate any changes in your vision to your eye care provider. They can help determine whether further investigation is necessary and provide reassurance regarding your visual health. Additionally, addressing anxiety through relaxation techniques or counseling may help alleviate some of the distress associated with your visual experiences.
