Persistent Nasal Swelling After Skincare Use - Dermatology

Nasal issues?

I apologize for the interruption, doctor.
After using a pore-clearing skincare product on my nose, it became swollen.
Prior to that, I frequently pinched my nose due to blowing my nose often, and I'm not sure if the swelling is related to skin trauma from pinching.
It has been 1 to 2 years, and the swelling has not subsided.
From the nostrils to the tip of my nose, there is swelling, but there is no redness or pain.
I have tried warm compresses, but they only seem to increase the swelling.
Recently, due to noticeable acne, I started using tretinoin, but it hasn't caused further swelling; in fact, it has slightly reduced the swelling.
I'm unsure why the swelling occurred.
Is there still a chance for the swelling to subside after such a long time?

Swelling can definitely be reduced, but you need to stop the current medication first.

Persistent nasal swelling, especially after using skincare products, can be a concerning issue. In your case, it seems that the swelling began after using a pore-clearing product, and you also mentioned frequent squeezing of your nose due to nasal congestion. This combination of factors could contribute to the swelling you are experiencing.

Firstly, it's important to understand that the skin on the nose is quite delicate and can be sensitive to various products, especially those containing active ingredients like acids or exfoliants. If the skincare product you used was too harsh or not suitable for your skin type, it could have caused irritation or an inflammatory response, leading to swelling. Additionally, frequent manipulation of the nose, such as squeezing or pinching, can cause trauma to the skin and underlying tissues, potentially resulting in localized swelling.

The fact that the swelling has persisted for 1-2 years is noteworthy. Chronic swelling can sometimes be due to a condition known as "chronic rhinitis," which can lead to inflammation of the nasal tissues. However, in your case, since there is no redness or pain associated with the swelling, it may not be an infection but rather a result of prolonged irritation or trauma.

You mentioned that you have tried heat application but found it worsened the swelling. This is not uncommon, as heat can increase blood flow to the area, potentially exacerbating inflammation. Cold compresses, on the other hand, may help reduce swelling by constricting blood vessels and decreasing inflammation.

The use of topical retinoids, such as AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid), can sometimes help with both acne and inflammation. It's encouraging to hear that you noticed a slight reduction in swelling with the use of AHA. This could be due to the product's ability to promote cell turnover and reduce clogged pores, which may indirectly help with the swelling.

As for the possibility of the swelling resolving, it can vary from person to person. If the swelling is due to chronic inflammation or irritation, it may take time for the skin to heal fully. In some cases, persistent swelling may require medical intervention, such as corticosteroid creams or injections, to reduce inflammation.

In conclusion, while there is a chance that the swelling can diminish over time, it is essential to monitor the area for any changes. If the swelling persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms such as redness, pain, or discharge, it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can provide a thorough examination and recommend appropriate treatments tailored to your specific condition. Additionally, consider avoiding harsh skincare products and excessive manipulation of the area to allow your skin to heal properly.
