Swelling of the face and mild fever after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had my lower left wisdom tooth extracted on August 18, and my face was slightly swollen.
I went to have the stitches removed on August 25, but the next morning my face was still swollen, and I had a slight fever of 37.5°C.
Could this be an infection?

Swelling and mild fever following a wisdom tooth extraction can indeed be concerning and may indicate an infection, but it's not always the case. After a dental procedure like wisdom tooth extraction, it is common for patients to experience some degree of swelling and discomfort as part of the healing process. This is due to the body's natural inflammatory response to surgery. However, when swelling persists and is accompanied by a fever, it raises the possibility of an infection at the surgical site.

In your case, you mentioned that you had swelling on the left side of your face after the extraction on August 18, and by August 25, the swelling had not subsided, and you experienced a mild fever of 37.5°C (99.5°F). While a mild fever can be a normal response to surgery, especially in the first few days post-operation, a persistent fever along with swelling could suggest that there may be an underlying issue, such as an infection.

Infections following tooth extractions can occur due to several reasons, including:
1. Bacterial Contamination: The oral cavity is home to numerous bacteria, and if the extraction site becomes contaminated, it can lead to an infection.

2. Poor Oral Hygiene: After surgery, maintaining proper oral hygiene is crucial. If the area is not kept clean, it can increase the risk of infection.

3. Dry Socket: This is a painful condition that can occur when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed. It can lead to inflammation and infection.

4. Underlying Conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions that affect your immune system, you may be more susceptible to infections.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with your dentist or oral surgeon as soon as possible. They can perform a thorough examination to determine if there is an infection or if your symptoms are part of the normal healing process. They may also take necessary steps, such as prescribing antibiotics if an infection is confirmed.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation. However, always follow the dosage instructions or consult your healthcare provider.

- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the swollen area can help reduce swelling and provide relief.

- Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure you stay hydrated and consume soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow.

- Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene by gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after 24 hours post-surgery to help keep the area clean. Avoid vigorous rinsing that could dislodge the blood clot.

- Rest: Allow your body to heal by getting plenty of rest.

In summary, while swelling and mild fever can be part of the normal healing process after wisdom tooth extraction, persistent symptoms warrant further evaluation to rule out infection. Prompt attention to these symptoms can help ensure a smoother recovery and prevent complications.
