Left lower abdominal tenderness?

Hello Doctor: I have recently noticed tenderness in my lower left abdomen.
When I press on it, I can hear bowel sounds, but it doesn't hurt when I'm not pressing.
I have been having bowel movements in the past few days, but they feel like slightly dehydrated hard stools.
I would like to ask if the tenderness in my lower left abdomen could be caused by mild constipation, or should I see a gynecologist? Thank you!

Hello: The pain in the lower left abdomen may be related to the colon or the urinary system, and in females, it could also involve the ovaries.
Pay attention to whether there is any fecal impaction, as constipation is not the only cause, and consuming spicy foods can also irritate the intestines.
If the condition does not improve, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.

Left lower abdominal pain can indeed be associated with mild constipation, especially if you are experiencing hard stools and a sensation of pressure or discomfort in that area. The fact that you hear bowel sounds when you apply pressure suggests that there is still some degree of gastrointestinal activity, which is a positive sign. However, the presence of hard stools can indicate that your bowel movements are not as regular or as hydrated as they should be, leading to discomfort.

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become infrequent or difficult to pass, often resulting in hard, dry stools. This can lead to abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort, particularly in the lower abdomen. In your case, the left lower abdominal pain might be due to the accumulation of stool in the colon, which can create pressure and discomfort in that area. Additionally, if you are experiencing any straining during bowel movements, this can further exacerbate the pain.

It is also important to consider other potential causes of left lower abdominal pain. While constipation is a common and relatively benign cause, other conditions such as diverticulitis, ovarian cysts, or even issues related to the urinary tract can present with similar symptoms. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, significant changes in bowel habits, or urinary symptoms, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation.

In terms of management, increasing your fluid intake and dietary fiber can help alleviate mild constipation. Foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, can promote regular bowel movements and soften stools. Additionally, regular physical activity can also aid in digestion and help prevent constipation.

If you find that dietary changes do not improve your symptoms, or if you continue to experience pain, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any other underlying conditions. If your healthcare provider suspects that the pain may be related to gynecological issues, they may refer you to a gynecologist for further assessment.

In summary, while mild constipation could be a contributing factor to your left lower abdominal pain, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and consider consulting a healthcare professional if the pain persists or if you have concerns about other potential causes. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and improve your overall comfort and well-being.
