Struggling with Decision-Making: Your Mental Health - Psychiatry

Often very annoying?

Dr.
Chiu: Recently, I often find myself unable to make decisions and hesitate for a long time (several days).
I feel a bit dizzy in my head, and about every two days, there are one or two things I can't decide on, which makes it difficult for me to concentrate in class (unable to focus).
I'm not sure what this situation is.
How can I improve it? Is this within a normal range? I feel like I'm going crazy.

A, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/08/31

Hello.
Modern society is constantly changing, bringing both advantages and disadvantages.
There are various sources of stress that can lead to physical and mental distress, which require adjustment and confrontation.
Consider it a part of personal growth and experience.
I suggest that when you feel troubled, you can utilize the Ministry of Health and Welfare's helpline (1925) for similar telephone counseling, which should be helpful.

Struggling with decision-making can be a significant source of anxiety and frustration, particularly in today's fast-paced society where choices abound. Your experience of prolonged indecision, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of being overwhelmed is not uncommon, and it can stem from various psychological factors.

Firstly, it’s essential to understand that indecision can be linked to anxiety. When faced with choices, the fear of making the wrong decision can paralyze us, leading to a cycle of overthinking. This phenomenon is often referred to as "analysis paralysis," where the desire to make the perfect choice prevents any choice from being made at all. This can be exacerbated by the pressure to make decisions that align with our values or expectations, especially in areas such as relationships, career paths, or personal goals.

Moreover, the inability to focus on tasks, such as attending classes or completing assignments, can be a symptom of underlying anxiety or stress. When our minds are preoccupied with worries about making the right decision, it becomes challenging to concentrate on the present moment. This can lead to a decline in academic performance and overall well-being.

To improve your decision-making skills and enhance your focus, consider the following strategies:
1. Limit Your Options: Sometimes, having too many choices can lead to confusion and anxiety. Try to narrow down your options to two or three viable choices. This simplification can make the decision-making process feel less overwhelming.

2. Set Time Limits: Give yourself a specific timeframe to make a decision. This can help prevent you from overthinking and encourage you to trust your instincts. For instance, allow yourself a day or two to weigh the pros and cons, but avoid dragging it out indefinitely.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Engaging in mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help ground you in the present moment and reduce anxiety. Mindfulness encourages you to observe your thoughts without judgment, which can help you gain clarity and reduce the emotional weight of decision-making.

4. Seek Support: Talking to friends, family, or a mental health professional can provide valuable perspectives and help you process your thoughts. Sometimes, discussing your options with someone else can illuminate aspects you hadn’t considered.

5. Accept Imperfection: Understand that no decision is perfect, and every choice comes with its own set of risks and rewards. Embracing the idea that it’s okay to make mistakes can alleviate some of the pressure you feel when making decisions.

6. Focus on Values: When faced with a decision, consider what aligns best with your core values and long-term goals. This can help you make choices that feel more authentic to who you are, reducing the likelihood of regret later on.

7. Professional Help: If your indecision and anxiety persist, it may be beneficial to consult a mental health professional. They can help you explore underlying issues and develop coping strategies tailored to your needs.

In conclusion, while experiencing difficulty in decision-making and concentration can be distressing, it is a common challenge that many people face. By implementing strategies to manage anxiety and enhance your decision-making skills, you can regain a sense of control and clarity in your life. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and taking proactive steps towards understanding and improving your mental health is a commendable journey.
