Taking medication?
This morning, I didn't have any water available, so I took my medication (Cefadroxil capsules) with milk tea instead.
A few seconds later, my throat suddenly hurt, and the pain lasted until the evening.
Could this be related to using milk tea? Is there an interaction between the two? I had no issues when I took it with plain water a few days ago.
Will I recover in a few days?

Dr. Ye Qianyu reply Family Medicine
Hello! Taking medication with milk tea may affect the efficacy of the drug.
However, the sore throat could be due to mucosal damage caused during swallowing, which should theoretically recover in a few days.
If discomfort persists, please consult an otolaryngologist.

Drinking milk tea instead of water when taking medication can potentially lead to throat pain, but the exact cause may vary based on individual circumstances. In your case, using milk tea to swallow Cefadroxil capsules may have contributed to your throat discomfort. There are several factors to consider regarding this situation.
Firstly, the composition of milk tea is different from plain water. Milk tea contains various ingredients such as milk, sugar, and tea, which can affect the way medication is absorbed and how it interacts with your body. For instance, the presence of milk can bind to certain medications, potentially reducing their effectiveness. In the case of Cefadroxil, while it is generally safe to take with food or beverages, the additional ingredients in milk tea could alter its absorption rate.
Secondly, the temperature and consistency of the milk tea might have played a role in your throat pain. If the milk tea was hot, it could have caused irritation to the sensitive mucous membranes in your throat, especially if you swallowed it quickly. Additionally, if the milk tea was thick or contained a lot of sugar, it might have made swallowing more difficult, leading to discomfort.
It's also important to consider that throat pain can arise from various causes, including irritation, inflammation, or even an allergic reaction. If you have a history of allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients in milk tea, such as lactose or additives, this could also explain your symptoms.
Regarding your question about recovery, if the throat pain is due to irritation from swallowing the milk tea, it is likely that it will improve within a few days as your throat heals. However, if the pain persists or worsens, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, while drinking milk tea instead of water when taking medication can potentially lead to throat pain, the specific cause in your case may involve a combination of factors, including the composition of the milk tea, its temperature, and individual sensitivities. If you experience ongoing discomfort, seeking medical advice is recommended to ensure proper evaluation and treatment.
