A lump has developed in the vulvar area, near the junction with the thigh?

Hello, doctor.
Referring to the VIO areas commonly discussed in hair removal, I have a small lump on the upper right side of my triangle, close to the right thigh crease (but not directly at the crease).
It hurts when I squat and press on it, and the lump is fixed in place and does not move much.
This condition has persisted for three weeks.
I would like to know what the initial assessment might be.
Should I see a gynecologist, dermatologist, or another recommended specialist? Thank you!

Yan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/09/11

Dr. Hu Ziren reply Oncology

It may just be a localized inflammation (such as folliculitis); it is recommended to see a gynecologist.

When it comes to painful bumps near the groin, it's essential to approach the situation with caution and awareness of potential underlying conditions. Based on your description, it sounds like you have a small, fixed lump in the area near the right thigh, which has been present for three weeks and causes pain when pressure is applied.
There are several possible explanations for this type of lump. One common cause could be a swollen lymph node, which can occur in response to infections or inflammation in the body. Lymph nodes can become tender and enlarged when the body is fighting off an infection, such as a skin infection or even a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Another possibility is a sebaceous cyst, which is a non-cancerous lump filled with a fatty substance that can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and discomfort. Additionally, ingrown hairs, particularly in areas that are frequently shaved or waxed, can also lead to painful bumps.

Given the location and symptoms you've described, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. The best course of action would be to consult a healthcare professional who specializes in conditions related to the area in question. In this case, a visit to a gynecologist or a dermatologist would be appropriate. A gynecologist can evaluate the lump in the context of reproductive health, while a dermatologist can assess skin-related issues, including cysts or infections.

During your appointment, the doctor will likely perform a physical examination and may ask about any additional symptoms you may be experiencing, such as fever, changes in skin color, or any discharge from the lump. Depending on their findings, they may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as an ultrasound, to get a clearer picture of the lump's characteristics.

It's important to note that while many lumps can be benign, any persistent or painful lump should not be ignored, especially if it has been present for several weeks. Early evaluation and diagnosis can lead to more effective treatment and peace of mind.

In the meantime, avoid manipulating or squeezing the lump, as this can exacerbate inflammation or lead to infection. If you notice any changes, such as increased redness, swelling, or fever, seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the painful bump near your groin, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. A gynecologist or dermatologist would be well-suited to evaluate your condition and provide the necessary care.
