There is a lump in the armpit that is painful when pressed?

Hello doctor, about two months ago, I experienced pain in my armpit.
Initially, I thought it was due to a pimple, but since it was very painful, I looked in the mirror and noticed swelling.
When I touched it, I felt a lump, and it was painful to touch or press.
After about two weeks, the lump decreased in size, and it no longer hurt when touched, but it still felt slightly raised and swollen.
I thought I would continue to observe it to see if it would resolve on its own.
However, today I noticed that it hurt again when the area was rubbed, and it seems that the lump has swollen again.
Pressing on it also causes pain, but the pain is not as pronounced as the last time.
Should I see a doctor? If so, which specialty should I consult? Thank you, doctor.

When experiencing a painful lump in the armpit, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and awareness of potential underlying issues. Given your description of the lump's progression—initially painful and swollen, then reducing in size but still present—it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially since the lump has recently become painful again.

When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Persistent Symptoms: If the lump persists for more than two weeks, especially if it fluctuates in size or becomes painful again, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. While some lumps can be benign, such as cysts or swollen lymph nodes due to infections, persistent or recurrent symptoms warrant further evaluation.

2. Changes in Size or Pain: Any noticeable change in the lump's size, shape, or pain level should be assessed by a doctor. The fact that the lump has become painful again after a period of improvement is a red flag that should not be ignored.

3. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue, these could indicate a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Which Specialist to See
For a painful lump in the armpit, you should consider seeing a primary care physician first. They can perform an initial evaluation and determine if further testing is necessary. Depending on their findings, they may refer you to a specialist, such as:
- General Surgeon: If the lump requires surgical evaluation or removal.

- Oncologist: If there is a concern about cancer, particularly if the lump is suspected to be a lymph node involved in a systemic issue.

- Dermatologist: If the lump appears to be related to skin issues, such as cysts or infections.

Possible Causes of a Painful Lump in the Armpit
1. Lymphadenopathy: Swollen lymph nodes can occur due to infections (viral or bacterial), autoimmune diseases, or malignancies. The armpit contains several lymph nodes that can become reactive to infections in the body.

2. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts or other types of cysts can develop in the armpit area and may become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and swelling.

3. Infections: Conditions such as abscesses or infections in the skin or underlying tissues can present as painful lumps. These often require drainage and antibiotic treatment.

4. Tumors: While less common, both benign and malignant tumors can present as lumps in the armpit. It is essential to rule out any serious conditions.

Conclusion
In summary, while some lumps may resolve on their own, the recurrence of pain and swelling in your armpit suggests that it is time to seek medical attention. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional will help determine the cause of the lump and the appropriate course of action. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential health issues effectively. Don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor for peace of mind and to ensure your health is prioritized.
