Can schistosomiasis parasites penetrate the skin?

Hello, Doctor.
I am currently pregnant and I am very careful to avoid Toxoplasma infection.
I researched the ways Toxoplasma can be transmitted, and one of them includes "contact with soil." Since then, I have been very anxious whenever I touch dirty things.
For example, today while walking outside (I walked through muddy areas...), the soles of my shoes got stuck to some stickers.
When I got home, I wore gloves to peel the stickers off the soles, but the gloves tore, and I became very worried that Toxoplasma could penetrate my skin and infect me.
(After dealing with my shoes, I washed my hands promptly and did not touch my eyes or eat anything.) I would like to ask the doctor, can Toxoplasma be transmitted simply through skin contact?

Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis, is primarily transmitted through ingestion rather than through skin contact. The main routes of infection include consuming undercooked or raw meat containing cysts, ingesting oocysts from contaminated food or water, and, in some cases, through contact with cat feces that contain oocysts. It is important to note that the oocysts are resilient and can survive in the environment for extended periods, particularly in soil and sand.

In your case, the concern about skin contact with contaminated surfaces, such as soil, is understandable, especially during pregnancy when the immune system is more vulnerable. However, Toxoplasma does not penetrate the skin. The risk of infection through skin contact is negligible. The primary concern arises when oocysts are ingested, which can happen if hands contaminated with oocysts are not washed before eating or touching the mouth or face.

To further clarify, here are some key points regarding Toxoplasma infection:
1. Transmission Routes: As mentioned, the primary transmission routes include:
- Ingestion of Oocysts: This can occur through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. For instance, if you were to touch soil or surfaces contaminated with cat feces and then eat without washing your hands, that could lead to infection.

- Consumption of Undercooked Meat: Eating meat that contains Toxoplasma cysts is a significant risk factor.

- Vertical Transmission: Pregnant women can transmit the infection to their unborn child, which can lead to serious complications.

2. Preventive Measures: To minimize the risk of infection, especially during pregnancy, consider the following precautions:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling soil, raw meat, or any potentially contaminated surfaces.

- Avoid consuming undercooked or raw meat.

- If you have a cat, ensure that its litter box is cleaned daily by someone who is not pregnant, or wear gloves and wash hands immediately afterward.

- Avoid gardening or handling soil without gloves, and wash hands afterward.

3. Symptoms and Diagnosis: Most healthy individuals may not exhibit symptoms if infected, but some may experience flu-like symptoms. In pregnant women, the infection can lead to severe complications for the fetus, including neurological issues and vision problems. If there is any suspicion of exposure, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for testing and guidance.

4. Conclusion: In summary, while it is wise to be cautious and maintain good hygiene practices, the likelihood of contracting Toxoplasma through skin contact is extremely low. Your proactive measures, such as washing your hands after handling potentially contaminated items, are excellent practices to prevent infection. If you have any further concerns or experience any symptoms, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
