Urinary issues

Doctor, I would like to ask about something.
Recently, I have been taking cold medicine because I have a cold.
I also participate in sports.
After practice last night, when I went home and urinated, I noticed that the color of my urine was different.
At first, I thought it might be hematuria, but upon closer inspection, it seemed to be a darker color than blood.
I was initially worried and told my mom, who suggested that I observe it for a day or two before seeing a doctor.
However, later in the evening, before going to bed, my urine returned to normal.
During the time from practice at 5:30 PM until around 10:00 PM, my urine was a dark brown color, but before bed, it changed back to yellow without the dark brown tint.
I haven't eaten anything particularly red in the past few days, and I have been taking cold medicine and eating normally.
I would like to ask the doctor what might be going on.

Hello: There could be many reasons for this.
Low water intake and excessive sweating may lead to dark urine.
If the urine is definitely red after intense exercise, it could indicate a rhabdomyolysis issue.
Additionally, dragon fruit may also contribute pigments to the urine.
Therefore, if this situation occurs again, it may be necessary to perform a urinalysis.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding changes in urine color can be quite concerning, especially when it appears to shift dramatically, as you've described. Urine color can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hydration levels, diet, medications, and underlying health conditions.
In your case, the deep brown color of your urine after physical activity and while taking cold medication could be attributed to several potential causes. First and foremost, dehydration is a common reason for darker urine. When you exercise, especially if you sweat a lot and do not replenish fluids adequately, your urine can become more concentrated, leading to a darker hue. It's essential to stay well-hydrated, particularly during and after physical exertion.

Additionally, certain medications, including some cold medications, can affect urine color. For instance, medications containing phenazopyridine, often used to relieve urinary tract discomfort, can cause urine to appear orange or red. While you mentioned that you are taking cold medicine, it would be beneficial to check the ingredients to see if any could be contributing to the color change.

Another consideration is the potential for hematuria, which is the presence of blood in the urine. However, you noted that the color returned to normal later in the evening, which may suggest that it was not a persistent issue. If the urine was indeed dark brown and not just a concentrated yellow, it could indicate the presence of myoglobin, a protein released from damaged muscles, particularly after intense exercise. This condition, known as rhabdomyolysis, can occur in athletes who engage in strenuous workouts without proper conditioning or hydration.

It's also worth noting that certain foods can influence urine color. While you mentioned not consuming anything particularly red, foods like beets, blackberries, or even certain vitamins can lead to changes in urine color.
Given that your urine returned to a normal yellow color later in the evening, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if you experience any additional symptoms such as pain during urination, persistent changes in urine color, or any other unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a urinalysis, to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, while occasional changes in urine color can be normal and often related to hydration, diet, or medications, persistent or concerning changes warrant medical attention. Always listen to your body, and if something feels off, don't hesitate to seek professional advice. Staying hydrated, especially during physical activity, is crucial for maintaining normal urine color and overall health.
