Managing Persistent Eye Itch: Concerns About Long-Term Use of Eye Drops - Ophthalmology

Share to:

Itchy eyes can be a symptom of various conditions, including allergies, dry eye syndrome, or conjunctivitis. It is advisable to consult an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis

I visited the doctor due to itching in my lower eyelid, and the doctor prescribed "Furlong." After using it for a week, I noticed significant improvement, so I stopped using it.
However, after 2-3 days, the itching returned, so I continued to use the entire bottle.
Again, after 2-3 days, the itching started again, and I had to return to the clinic for more medication.
I found that continuous use prevents the itching, but after stopping for 2-3 days, the itching resumes.
I have already finished two bottles and am currently using the third one.
I'm worried about potential long-term issues with continuous use, but not using it leads to itching.
Doctor, what should I do? Thank you.

Hello: If necessary, after the physician's assessment, it can be used.
Long-term use requires monitoring of intraocular pressure.
If the intraocular pressure does not increase, other side effects are less common, and it should be safe to use.

Managing persistent eye itch can be quite challenging, especially when it seems to be a recurring issue that requires ongoing treatment. Your experience with the eye drops, particularly "復爾朗" (likely referring to a topical antihistamine or anti-inflammatory), highlights a common concern among patients dealing with chronic eye irritation or allergies.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that while eye drops can provide significant relief from symptoms such as itching, redness, and discomfort, their long-term use should be approached with caution. Many eye drops, especially those containing preservatives, can lead to further irritation or even dependency, where the eyes become accustomed to the medication, and symptoms return upon cessation. This is particularly true for drops that contain steroids or other active ingredients that may alter the natural balance of the eye's surface.

In your case, the pattern of relief followed by a return of symptoms after stopping the drops suggests that your underlying condition may not be fully addressed. It’s crucial to identify the root cause of your eye itchiness. Common causes include allergies (to pollen, dust, pet dander, etc.), dry eye syndrome, or even conditions like blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids).
Here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms more effectively:
1. Consultation with an Eye Specialist: If you haven’t already, consider seeing an ophthalmologist or an allergist. They can perform tests to determine if allergies are the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments.

2. Consider Non-Preserved Eye Drops: If you are using preservative-containing drops, switching to preservative-free alternatives can help reduce irritation. These drops can be used more frequently without the risk of exacerbating symptoms.

3. Regular Eye Hygiene: Maintaining good eyelid hygiene can help alleviate symptoms, especially if blepharitis is a concern. This can include warm compresses and eyelid scrubs to remove debris and reduce inflammation.

4. Environmental Control: If allergies are a factor, try to minimize exposure to known allergens. This might include using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning your living space.

5. Alternative Treatments: Depending on the underlying cause, treatments such as artificial tears for dry eyes, antihistamine drops for allergies, or even prescription medications may be warranted. Your doctor may also consider immunotherapy if allergies are confirmed.

6. Gradual Reduction of Eye Drops: If you are concerned about dependency on the drops, discuss a tapering plan with your doctor. Gradually reducing the frequency of use may help your eyes adjust without a significant return of symptoms.

7. Lifestyle Modifications: Staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and managing stress can also contribute to overall eye health.

In summary, while it’s understandable to rely on eye drops for immediate relief, it’s essential to address the underlying causes of your symptoms to prevent a cycle of dependency. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider will ensure that your treatment plan is effective and adjusted as needed. If symptoms persist despite these measures, further investigation may be necessary to rule out other conditions.
