The abrasion from the car accident still appears bright red?
Hello, doctor.
I was involved in a car accident on August 29 of this year, which affected important limb areas, resulting only in abrasions on my hands and feet.
Both the emergency department and the neurosurgery department prescribed Blomyclin ointment for application.
The pain significantly decreased within about a week, and by two weeks, the scabs had formed and swelling reduced.
However, to this day, there are still areas of bright red (close to pink) at the wound site.
I am concerned about the possibility of noticeable scarring and would like to know if I should visit a plastic surgeon for further evaluation.

After experiencing an accident, it's common to have concerns about the healing process, especially when it comes to visible injuries like abrasions or lacerations. In your case, the persistent redness at the site of your injury is understandable, and it's good that you're being proactive about your health.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that the healing process can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as age, skin type, the severity of the injury, and overall health can all influence how quickly and effectively your skin heals. In general, redness can be a normal part of the healing process, especially in the weeks following an injury. It indicates increased blood flow to the area, which is essential for healing as it brings nutrients and immune cells to the site of injury.
Typically, redness may persist for several weeks to months after an injury, and it can gradually fade as the skin continues to heal. However, if the redness remains prominent beyond a few months or if you notice any other concerning symptoms—such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge from the wound—it would be wise to seek further evaluation.
Regarding your specific question about whether to see a plastic surgeon, there are a few considerations:
1. Time Since Injury: Since your accident occurred in late August and it is now several months later, if the redness has not improved significantly, it may be beneficial to consult with a specialist. Plastic surgeons are well-versed in managing scars and can provide options for treatment if necessary.
2. Scar Management: If you are concerned about the potential for scarring, a plastic surgeon can assess the area and recommend treatments that may help minimize scar formation. This could include topical treatments, silicone gel sheets, or even procedures like laser therapy, depending on the nature of your injury and the appearance of the scar.
3. Persistent Symptoms: If you experience any persistent symptoms such as itching, pain, or changes in the texture of the skin, these could indicate complications that warrant professional evaluation.
4. Cosmetic Concerns: If the appearance of the injury is affecting your self-esteem or quality of life, it is absolutely valid to seek a consultation with a plastic surgeon. They can provide guidance on the best course of action to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome.
In summary, while some redness can be a normal part of the healing process, if you are concerned about the appearance of your injury or if it has not improved over time, consulting with a plastic surgeon is a reasonable step. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatment options to help you achieve the best possible outcome. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better results when it comes to scar management.
