Blurred vision at close range?

Hello doctor, I have myopia of about 450 degrees and astigmatism of 250 in one eye and 50 in the other.
Recently, over the past week or two, I've often felt that my vision is out of focus when looking at my phone or computer (it gets a bit better after resting).
My distance vision is normal.
Could you please tell me what this issue might be?

Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/09/22

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello Mr.
Huang: It is possible that your eyes are too fatigued, which may prevent the ciliary muscles from adjusting properly.
This indicates that you may be experiencing slight eye strain.
If this continues, you could benefit from a pair of reading glasses for close-up tasks.

Blurry vision, especially when using digital devices like smartphones or computers, can be a common issue for individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. Given your prescription of -4.50 diopters for myopia and varying degrees of astigmatism, there are several factors that could contribute to your recent experience of blurry vision.

Causes of Blurry Vision with Myopia
1. Digital Eye Strain: Prolonged use of screens can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and difficulty focusing. This is particularly common among individuals with myopia, as their eyes may struggle to maintain focus on screens for extended periods.

2. Uncorrected Vision: If your glasses or contact lenses are not up to date, or if you are not wearing them while using screens, this can lead to blurry vision. Even slight changes in your prescription can affect your ability to focus clearly, especially during prolonged near work.

3. Accommodation Fatigue: The eye's ability to focus on near objects is called accommodation. When you spend a lot of time focusing on screens, your eye muscles can become fatigued, leading to temporary blurry vision. This is often relieved by taking breaks and allowing your eyes to relax.

4. Astigmatism: Your astigmatism can cause distortion or blurriness at all distances, particularly when your eyes are tired or strained. This can be exacerbated by screen time, as the eyes may not be able to adjust quickly enough to the changing focus required for reading text on a screen.

5. Dry Eyes: Staring at screens often leads to reduced blinking, which can cause dry eyes. Dryness can lead to discomfort and blurry vision. Using artificial tears can help alleviate this symptom.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Regular Eye Exams: Ensure that you have regular eye examinations to keep your prescription up to date. If you notice changes in your vision, it’s essential to consult your eye care professional.

2. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: To reduce digital eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps relax the eye muscles and reduces fatigue.

3. Adjust Screen Settings: Make sure your screen brightness is comfortable and consider using blue light filters. Adjusting the text size and contrast can also help reduce strain.

4. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on your screen. Avoid working in dim light, as this can increase strain on your eyes.

5. Use Corrective Lenses: If you wear glasses or contact lenses, ensure they are appropriate for your current prescription. Consider discussing with your eye care provider about specialized lenses designed for computer use, which may help reduce strain.

6. Stay Hydrated and Blink Regularly: Keep your eyes moist by staying hydrated and consciously blinking more often while using screens.

7. Consider Vision Therapy: If you continue to experience issues, you might benefit from vision therapy, which can help improve your focusing abilities and reduce strain.

8. Limit Screen Time: If possible, limit the amount of time spent on screens, especially for activities that require prolonged focus.

In summary, blurry vision when using screens can be attributed to a combination of digital eye strain, uncorrected vision, and fatigue of the eye muscles. By implementing the above strategies and maintaining regular check-ups with your eye care professional, you can help alleviate these symptoms and improve your overall visual comfort. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from an eye specialist.
