Wisdom tooth suture removal after surgery?

I had my wisdom tooth extracted on September 2nd, and during my follow-up appointment on September 6th, the doctor indicated that there was inflammation and scheduled another follow-up for September 22nd.
However, due to the doctor's issue, the clinic would like to postpone the follow-up until October to see if the stitches can be removed.

1.
I would like to ask if not removing the stitches for an extended period will affect the wound.
I couldn't find any examples online of stitches not being removed for a month.

2.
Should I consider switching doctors or clinics to have the wound checked and the stitches removed, or should I continue waiting for my original doctor? Thank you for your help.

Hello: It is advisable to first clarify with the original clinic physician the reason for the delayed suture removal.
Although the typical timeframe for suture removal is 7 to 10 days, if the wound is particularly large or deep, or if there are other factors such as the use of medication or medical materials, the decision should ultimately be based on the physician's experience and the current condition.
If you have concerns about the original clinic or physician, you may seek a second opinion before making a decision.

After wisdom tooth extraction, the healing process is crucial, and the timing of stitch removal can significantly impact recovery. In your case, you had your wisdom tooth extracted on September 2nd, and your doctor noted inflammation during your follow-up on September 6th, scheduling another appointment for September 22nd. However, due to the doctor's circumstances, the removal of stitches has been postponed until October.
1. Impact of Delayed Stitch Removal: Leaving stitches in place for an extended period can lead to several complications. Typically, stitches are removed within 7 to 10 days post-surgery, depending on the type of stitches used (dissolvable vs. non-dissolvable) and the healing progress. If stitches remain in place longer than necessary, they can become a source of irritation, potentially leading to inflammation or infection. The body may also react to the foreign material, causing additional discomfort or delayed healing. In some cases, if the stitches are non-dissolvable, they may start to break down and could even become embedded in the tissue, complicating the healing process.
2. Considering a Change of Doctor or Clinic: If you feel that your healing process is not being adequately monitored or if you are experiencing significant discomfort, it is reasonable to seek a second opinion. Consulting another dentist or oral surgeon can provide you with additional insights into your condition and whether the delay in stitch removal is appropriate. It is essential to prioritize your health and comfort; if you feel uncertain about your current doctor's approach, seeking another professional's opinion can help ensure you receive the best care possible.

In addition to these points, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice increased pain, swelling, or any discharge from the extraction site, these could be signs of infection, and you should seek immediate medical attention. Proper oral hygiene is also crucial during this period; gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help keep the area clean and promote healing.

In summary, while a slight delay in stitch removal may not always lead to severe complications, it is essential to be vigilant about your healing process. If you have concerns about your recovery or the management of your stitches, do not hesitate to consult another healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Your health and comfort should always come first, and ensuring that you have the right support during your recovery is vital.
