Palpitations?
About one or two years ago, my heart check-ups showed no significant issues.
However, I have experienced symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which have improved.
Recently, after several instances of masturbation, I have noticed some strange symptoms occurring about 10 seconds after climax.
(I usually masturbate about every 2 to 3 days, but since the symptoms appeared, I have only dared to do it once every few weeks.)
1.
My heart suddenly races, and the wrist of the hand I used for masturbation goes numb for a moment before gradually recovering.
2.
I hear a small popping sound at the back of my head, followed by a sensation of heat rushing down from the top of my body.
Although I return to normal afterward, this has caused me considerable concern, especially since I already have some panic symptoms, making me hesitant to masturbate now.
Doctor, what could be the cause of this? Thank you.

Hello, I believe the reaction of the autonomic nervous system is due to excitement and can be observed without concern.

Experiencing palpitations and unusual sensations after sexual activity, including masturbation, can be concerning, especially if you have a history of thyroid issues like hyperthyroidism. While it’s good to hear that your heart was previously checked and found to be in good condition, the symptoms you describe warrant further exploration.
Palpitations, or the sensation of feeling your heart beating rapidly or irregularly, can occur for various reasons, especially during or after sexual activity. Here are some potential causes and considerations:
1. Physiological Response: Sexual activity, including masturbation, increases heart rate and blood pressure due to heightened arousal and physical exertion. This is a normal response, but if you are experiencing palpitations, it may be more pronounced in your case, especially if you have anxiety or panic symptoms.
2. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Given your mention of having panic symptoms, it’s possible that anxiety could be contributing to your experience of palpitations. Anxiety can lead to hyperventilation, which may cause sensations of heart racing, lightheadedness, or even tingling in the extremities. The "pop" sensation you describe could be related to muscle tension or a sudden release of tension in the neck or head area.
3. Hyperthyroidism: Since you have a history of hyperthyroidism, it’s important to consider that this condition can lead to increased heart rate and palpitations. If your thyroid levels are not well-regulated, this could exacerbate your symptoms during times of physical exertion or excitement.
4. Nerve Sensations: The sensation of your wrist going numb could be related to nerve compression or tension in the arm during masturbation. This can happen if the position you are in puts pressure on certain nerves. The "heat wave" sensation could also be a result of increased blood flow or a response to the release of endorphins during orgasm.
5. Dehydration or Electrolyte Imbalance: Sometimes, dehydration or an imbalance in electrolytes can lead to palpitations. Ensure you are well-hydrated and consider your dietary intake of potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which are important for heart health.
6. Underlying Cardiac Issues: Although your previous heart check was normal, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it may be wise to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. They may recommend an electrocardiogram (ECG) or a Holter monitor to assess your heart's rhythm during episodes of palpitations.
Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your symptoms and history, it would be prudent to discuss these concerns with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough assessment, including a review of your thyroid function and heart health.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of when these symptoms occur, their duration, and any associated activities or feelings. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
- Practice Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is a contributing factor, consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your routine to help manage stress.
- Limit Stimulants: Reduce or eliminate caffeine and other stimulants, as these can exacerbate palpitations.
- Gradual Exposure: If you are feeling anxious about sexual activity, consider gradually reintroducing it into your routine at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to normal physiological responses or anxiety, it is essential to seek professional guidance to rule out any underlying conditions and to address your concerns comprehensively. Taking proactive steps towards understanding and managing your symptoms can help alleviate your anxiety and improve your overall well-being.
