Irregular Occurrences of Floaters in Vision - Ophthalmology

The appearance of floaters is irregular?

Hello, Doctor Gao.
I apologize for bothering you again.
As I mentioned in my previous inquiry, I have floaters, but they are particularly noticeable when looking at white objects or the sky.
However, this afternoon, while I was sitting and doing nothing, I suddenly noticed two quite distinct and clear lines of floaters that lasted for about 5 seconds before disappearing.
The only difference in my day compared to usual was that I used my electronic devices a bit more than normal.
I would like to ask you, is there any concern or underlying issue related to these floaters that appeared suddenly and irregularly? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: Most of the time, there shouldn't be any issues.
Just observe for now; if there are no changes, you should be reassured.
However, if there is an increase in symptoms, it would be best to get checked to see if there are any retinal problems.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the sudden appearance of floaters in your vision. It's understandable to feel anxious when experiencing changes in your eyesight, especially if you already have a history of floaters, commonly known as "myodesopsia."
Floaters are typically caused by changes in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age or due to certain conditions like high myopia (nearsightedness), the vitreous can undergo liquefaction and shrinkage, leading to the formation of floaters. These floaters can appear as spots, threads, or cobweb-like structures that drift across your field of vision. They are often more noticeable against bright backgrounds, such as a clear sky or a white wall, which aligns with your observation that they are particularly prominent when looking at white objects.

The sudden appearance of clear, distinct floaters, especially if they are different from your usual experience, can be concerning. While floaters are generally benign, there are instances where they may indicate underlying issues, particularly if they are accompanied by flashes of light, a sudden increase in the number of floaters, or any changes in your peripheral vision. These symptoms could suggest a retinal tear or detachment, which is a more serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.

In your case, the fact that these floaters appeared suddenly and were more pronounced after extended use of digital devices could be related to eye strain or fatigue. Prolonged screen time can lead to visual discomfort and may exacerbate the perception of floaters. However, it is crucial to monitor any changes in your symptoms. If the floaters persist, increase in number, or are accompanied by other visual disturbances, it would be prudent to consult with an eye care professional for a comprehensive examination.

Regular eye check-ups are essential, especially for individuals with high myopia or a history of floaters. Your eye doctor can perform detailed assessments, including a dilated fundus examination, to evaluate the health of your retina and vitreous. They can also provide guidance on managing your symptoms and reducing eye strain, which may include recommendations for breaks during screen time, proper lighting, and exercises to alleviate discomfort.

In summary, while the sudden appearance of floaters can be alarming, they are often benign, particularly if they resolve quickly and are not accompanied by other symptoms. However, given your history and the changes you've experienced, it is advisable to remain vigilant and seek professional advice if you notice any concerning developments. Regular monitoring and communication with your eye care provider will help ensure your eye health remains a priority. Thank you for your question, and I hope this information provides clarity and reassurance!
