The secretion is dark in color?

Hello Dr.
Zheng: I have experienced an increase in discharge that is dark in color for the past two months.
I have not engaged in any sexual activity up to this point.
Why is this happening? My last menstrual period started on September 19, and I should expect my next period around October 19, but recently I have noticed discharge from my vagina that is thick and contains streaks of blood.
I have been taking evening primrose oil; could this be related? Additionally, I have a habit of using a vaginal spray to eliminate odor.
Could this have any effect? Please help me with this, thank you!

Dr. Li Guanghan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: Women who are not sexually active can still experience vaginitis, which may lead to increased and darker vaginal discharge.
If there is no discomfort, maintaining good hygiene is recommended.
Your ovulation day is around October 5th, during which you may notice some spotting and an increase in discharge.
Additionally, severe vaginitis and the use of hormonal medications or traditional Chinese medicine may also result in spotting.

Cheng Jin-He, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hsinchu City Hospital.

Understanding dark discharge and its implications can be a source of concern for many women. The presence of dark discharge, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms, can indicate various underlying conditions. In your case, you have noted an increase in dark, thick discharge with blood streaks, which has raised questions about its causes and whether your lifestyle choices, such as taking evening primrose oil and using vaginal sprays, could be contributing factors.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that vaginal discharge can vary significantly throughout the menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations. Normal discharge can range from clear and stretchy to thick and opaque, and it can take on different colors, including white, yellow, or even brownish hues. Dark discharge, particularly if it appears brown or black, often indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the body, which can occur at the end of a menstrual period or due to other factors.

In your situation, since you mentioned that you have not engaged in any sexual activity recently, it is less likely that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are the cause of your symptoms. However, it’s still essential to consider other potential causes, such as hormonal imbalances, infections, or even benign conditions like polyps or fibroids. The use of evening primrose oil is generally considered safe and is often used to help with menstrual symptoms, but it can affect hormone levels in some women, potentially leading to changes in discharge.
Additionally, the use of vaginal sprays or douches can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, potentially leading to irritation or infections. The vagina is self-cleaning, and introducing products that are not specifically designed for vaginal health can sometimes lead to complications. If you are experiencing unusual discharge, it may be wise to reconsider the use of these products.

Given that your last menstrual period was on September 19 and you expect your next one around October 19, the timing of your discharge could also be related to your menstrual cycle. If the discharge is occurring outside of your expected cycle, it could be indicative of ovulation or hormonal fluctuations. Some women experience mid-cycle spotting or discharge that can be mistaken for menstruation.

However, if the discharge persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or a foul odor, it is crucial to seek medical attention. These could be signs of an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, which would require treatment.
In summary, while dark discharge can be a normal occurrence related to hormonal changes, it is essential to monitor any accompanying symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns. A thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly laboratory tests, can help determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional advice when you notice changes in your body.
