Itching in the right side of the chest?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I suddenly noticed that my right breast has shrunk and it also itches.
It doesn't itch when I wear a bra, but it itches a lot when I'm not wearing one, which I find very strange.
It doesn't seem like the symptoms of breast eczema.
I would like to ask why there is itching.
Just squeezing it provides some relief, unlike eczema, which would cause bleeding and skin breakdown.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Dr. Cai Yonglong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
If the itching persists, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for examination and treatment.
If you notice any lumps, please see a breast surgeon, and a biopsy may be necessary.

Itchy sensations in the breast, particularly when localized to one side, can be concerning and may arise from various causes. In your case, the right breast has not only become smaller but also exhibits itchiness, particularly when not wearing a bra. While it is good that you do not experience severe symptoms like bleeding or skin breakdown, it is essential to explore potential underlying issues.
One possible cause of localized itching could be related to skin conditions. For instance, contact dermatitis can occur when the skin reacts to irritants or allergens, which might not be present when wearing a bra but could be more noticeable when the skin is exposed. This could be due to fabric, laundry detergents, or even personal care products. Keeping the area clean and moisturized can help alleviate some of the discomfort.
Another consideration is the possibility of hormonal changes affecting breast tissue. Fluctuations in hormones, particularly around the menstrual cycle, can lead to changes in breast size and sensitivity. This is often accompanied by tenderness or discomfort, but it can also manifest as itching. If you are nearing your menstrual cycle, this could explain some of the changes you are experiencing.
Additionally, the sensation of itchiness could also be linked to the skin's natural response to dryness or irritation. If the skin on your breast is dry, it may become itchy, especially in colder weather or if you are not moisturizing adequately. Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help soothe the skin.
In some cases, the itchiness could be related to a benign condition known as mammary duct ectasia, where a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and thickens. This can lead to discomfort and itching, although it is more common in women who are nearing menopause.
It is also important to consider the possibility of infections, such as a fungal infection, which can cause localized itching and discomfort. If there is any redness, swelling, or unusual discharge, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Given that you mentioned the right breast has become smaller, it is crucial to monitor this change. Breast size asymmetry can occur naturally, but sudden changes should be assessed by a medical professional. In some cases, it could indicate underlying issues that may need further investigation, such as hormonal imbalances or other breast conditions.
If the itching persists or worsens, or if you notice any other changes in your breast, such as lumps, changes in skin texture, or discharge, it is advisable to seek a consultation with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a clinical breast exam and possibly imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while localized itching and changes in breast size can be benign and related to various factors, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a thorough evaluation can help address any concerns you may have.
