Post-Retinal Laser Surgery: Can You Rub Your Eyes and What to Expect? - Ophthalmology

After retinal laser surgery, is it okay to rub your eyes? Is it normal to occasionally see small flashes of white light?

Last week, I underwent laser surgery due to a discovered retinal hole.
Over the past week, I occasionally experienced eye allergies and inadvertently rubbed my eyes (though I don't think I did it very forcefully).
Recently, in the last couple of days, I've started seeing a small white flash of light (at a specific angle, it appears whether my eyes are open or closed), which comes and goes.
Sometimes, I also feel sudden discomfort or a prickling sensation around my eyes.
I would like to ask: 1.
Is the flashing white light a sign of incomplete recovery after surgery? Is this normal? 2.
Does rubbing my eyes affect the recovery from the laser surgery? 3.
Is the prickling sensation related to the recovery of my eyes? (It feels somewhat like a sudden increase in intraocular pressure, but my eye pressure was normal during previous measurements.) Or could there be another reason? 4.
Do I need to schedule an immediate follow-up appointment (my original follow-up was scheduled for a month later)? What symptoms would require urgent attention? Thank you very much for your response, and I appreciate your hard work!

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Yezi: 1.
It is possible that the location of the hole is causing the retina to be active.
Since the laser treatment is around the hole, it will not change the condition of the hole itself.
2.
Rubbing your eyes should not be an issue.
3.
Occasional sharp sensations are likely not a concern.
4.
I cannot guarantee that this situation is normal.
It is best to have it checked.

After undergoing retinal laser surgery, it is common to have questions and concerns regarding the recovery process and potential complications. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. Flashing White Light: The appearance of a small white light flashing at certain angles can be concerning. This phenomenon may be related to the healing process of the retina or could be a result of changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. After laser surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience visual disturbances as the eye heals. However, if this flashing persists or worsens, it is essential to consult your eye doctor to rule out any complications such as retinal detachment or other issues.

2. Rubbing Your Eyes: Rubbing your eyes after laser surgery can potentially interfere with the healing process. While gentle rubbing may not cause immediate harm, it can lead to increased pressure in the eye and may displace any healing tissue. It is advisable to avoid rubbing your eyes altogether, especially in the early stages of recovery. If you experience itching or discomfort, consider using lubricating eye drops instead of rubbing.

3. Stinging Sensation: The stinging or discomfort you are experiencing could be a normal part of the recovery process. After laser surgery, the eye may be more sensitive, and you might experience symptoms similar to dry eye or increased pressure. It is important to monitor these symptoms; if they persist or become more severe, you should reach out to your eye care provider. They may recommend specific treatments or adjustments to your post-operative care regimen.

4. When to Return for Follow-Up: If your symptoms are mild and manageable, you may not need to return for an earlier appointment than scheduled. However, if you experience significant changes in your vision, increased pain, or any new symptoms such as a sudden increase in flashes or floaters, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of complications that require prompt evaluation.

In summary, while some visual disturbances and discomfort can be part of the normal healing process after retinal laser surgery, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to contact your eye care professional. They are best equipped to assess your condition and provide guidance tailored to your specific situation. Always prioritize your eye health and follow the advice of your healthcare provider for a smooth recovery.
