Unilateral throat pain?

Hello, doctor.
I asked a question a few days ago and later visited an otolaryngologist.
I emphasized that I have a sore throat, with the pain located near the Adam's apple, deeper on the left side.
The doctor used a laryngoscope for examination and informed me that there is inflammation, prescribing medication for me to take at home.
I would like to know if there could be other issues related to the unilateral throat pain on the left side, especially since it hurts when swallowing.
I haven't encountered such deeper throat problems before and I'm a bit worried.
I would like to ask for your opinion, thank you, doctor.

Wayne, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/10/02

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, if the physician's physical examination and endoscopic findings indicate inflammation, it is recommended to continue medication treatment and pay attention to diet.
If there is no improvement, a follow-up appointment for further evaluation and treatment may be necessary.

Understanding left-sided throat pain can be a complex issue, as it may stem from various causes, some of which can be benign while others may require more attention. Given your description of the pain being localized near the Adam's apple (thyroid cartilage) and the fact that it intensifies during swallowing, it is essential to consider several potential factors.

First and foremost, the inflammation noted during your ENT examination is a significant clue. Inflammation in the throat can arise from several conditions, including viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or even irritants such as smoke or pollutants. A common cause of unilateral throat pain is tonsillitis or pharyngitis, where one side may be more affected than the other. If the inflammation is due to a viral infection, it may resolve on its own, but bacterial infections, such as strep throat, may require antibiotic treatment.

Another possibility is that the pain could be related to muscle strain or tension in the throat area, particularly if you have been experiencing stress or have been using your voice excessively. This can lead to discomfort that may feel more pronounced on one side. Additionally, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause irritation in the throat, leading to pain that may be felt more on one side, especially if the reflux is more pronounced on that side.

In some cases, unilateral throat pain can be associated with referred pain from other structures, such as the ear or jaw. Conditions like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction or dental issues can manifest as throat pain, particularly if there is inflammation or irritation in the surrounding areas.

While your ENT examination revealed inflammation, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or changes in your voice, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may consider further investigations, such as imaging studies or a referral to a specialist, to rule out more serious conditions, including abscess formation or other structural issues.

In summary, while unilateral throat pain can often be attributed to inflammation or infection, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek further evaluation if your symptoms do not improve or if new symptoms arise. Maintaining good hydration, avoiding irritants, and following your doctor's recommendations regarding medication can help alleviate your symptoms. If you have any concerns or if the pain continues, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment and guidance.
