Missed Period After Taking Menstrual Induction Pills: Possible Pregnancy? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Took menstrual induction medication but did not get my period?

Hello Doctor, my last menstrual period started on July 19.
I had unprotected intercourse a couple of times on September 9, and I began taking Mifegyne on September 17 for five days.
I took a pregnancy test on September 23, which showed one line, and I still haven't had my period as of October 4.
During this time, my nipples have been consistently erect.
I would like to know if there is a possibility of pregnancy, or if it could be due to other medical conditions.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Taozi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/10/04

Hello, the chances of pregnancy should be low.
Please wait another week, and if your period still hasn't arrived, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to missed periods after taking menstrual induction pills, there are several factors to consider regarding the possibility of pregnancy and other potential health issues. Based on your timeline, you had your last menstrual period on July 19, and after engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse on September 9, you began taking menstrual induction pills (美婷娜) on September 17. You then took the pills for five days and subsequently tested for pregnancy on September 23, which returned a negative result. As of October 4, you still have not had your period, and you are experiencing persistent breast tenderness.

Firstly, it is important to understand that menstrual induction pills are designed to help regulate or induce menstruation. However, these medications can sometimes lead to hormonal fluctuations that may affect your menstrual cycle. After taking such medications, it is not uncommon for your body to take some time to readjust, which can result in a delayed period.
Regarding your sexual activity on September 9, it is possible that sperm could have survived in your reproductive tract for several days, leading to a potential pregnancy if ovulation occurred shortly after. However, since you took the menstrual induction pills shortly after this encounter, the likelihood of pregnancy may be reduced, as these pills can alter the hormonal environment necessary for implantation.

The negative pregnancy test on September 23 is also a significant indicator. Pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, but they can sometimes yield false negatives, especially if taken too early. Given that you still have not had your period as of October 4, it would be advisable to retest for pregnancy, ideally using a first-morning urine sample, which is more concentrated and can provide a more accurate result.

Persistent breast tenderness can be a symptom of various conditions, including hormonal changes, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), or early pregnancy. If you are experiencing other symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or changes in appetite, these could further suggest pregnancy. However, if these symptoms are isolated to breast tenderness and you have a negative pregnancy test, it may be worth considering other factors such as stress, changes in weight, or other hormonal imbalances.

If you continue to miss your period or if you have any concerns about your health, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more comprehensive evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels, and provide guidance based on your specific situation.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the timeline of events, the negative pregnancy test and the use of menstrual induction pills suggest that your missed period may be due to hormonal changes rather than pregnancy. It is advisable to retest for pregnancy and consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and peace of mind.
