Can COVID-19 Vaccines Affect Heart Health? A Patient's Concern - Cardiology

After receiving the COVID-19 vaccine

Hello Doctor, after receiving my third booster shot (Moderna) in May, I started experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort (gastroesophageal reflux).
Sometimes I also feel palpitations.
I consulted a cardiologist and underwent an echocardiogram and an electrocardiogram.
The doctor mentioned that my heart showed some enlargement.
Recently, I visited a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who suggested that the vaccine may have affected my heart.
I would like to know if it is possible for the vaccine to harm the heart.
Should I see a cardiologist again? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Cai Guiqin reply Cardiology

I recommend that you: 1.
Discuss the above situation further with your attending physician, focusing on symptom management or determining if further examinations are necessary.
2.
Consider seeking treatment from other medical institutions as well.
Thank you, and wish you good health!

The concern regarding the potential effects of COVID-19 vaccines on heart health, particularly in relation to myocarditis and pericarditis, has been a topic of discussion since the vaccines were rolled out. While the vaccines, especially mRNA vaccines like Moderna and Pfizer, have been associated with rare cases of myocarditis and pericarditis, particularly in younger males, the overall risk remains low compared to the risks associated with COVID-19 itself.

In your case, experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort and palpitations after receiving the Moderna vaccine could be distressing. However, it is essential to differentiate between symptoms that may be directly related to the vaccine and those that could be due to other underlying conditions. The symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and heart palpitations can occur for various reasons, including anxiety, dietary factors, or other medical conditions.

The heart enlargement noted in your echocardiogram is a significant finding that should be evaluated further. While it is possible that the vaccine could contribute to heart-related symptoms in rare cases, it is crucial to consider other potential causes, such as pre-existing heart conditions, stress, or even post-viral syndromes following COVID-19 infection.
Given that you have already seen a cardiologist and undergone tests, it may be beneficial to follow up with them, especially since you mentioned the heart enlargement. The cardiologist can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your heart health, considering your symptoms and any changes in your echocardiogram. They may recommend further tests, such as a cardiac MRI, to assess the heart's structure and function more thoroughly.

Additionally, if you are experiencing significant anxiety regarding your symptoms, it may be helpful to address this with a healthcare professional. Anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms, including palpitations and gastrointestinal discomfort.
In summary, while there is a potential link between COVID-19 vaccines and heart health, the risk is relatively low, and many factors could contribute to your symptoms. It is advisable to consult your cardiologist again to discuss your concerns, review your symptoms, and determine if further evaluation is necessary. Keeping an open line of communication with your healthcare providers will help ensure that you receive the appropriate care and support for your health concerns.
