Stool color
Hello, I have stage 3B lung adenocarcinoma and am currently undergoing treatment with Anlotinib.
I just had a PET scan last Friday, and aside from some highlights in the lungs, everything else appeared normal.
Recently, my bowel movements have varied: a few days ago, I had watery stools, then loose stools, and today I had soft, formed stools.
The color of my stools has been yellow, with brown and black specks.
I have recently eaten spinach, beef, and nuts.
Since yesterday, I have been experiencing bloating and discomfort in my stomach, but it's not severe enough to require medication.
I have a few questions: 1.
Is there anything abnormal about the consistency and color of my stools? What diseases could this indicate? 2.
Can Anlotinib cause gastrointestinal damage? 3.
Given that I just had a PET scan, is there a possibility of stomach or colorectal cancer with these symptoms? Thank you for your response, doctor.

It is likely a case of acute gastroenteritis, not gastrointestinal cancer.
Any potential side effects of the medication should be discussed with the attending physician.

Understanding stool color changes can provide valuable insights into your digestive health. Given your medical history of stage 3B lung adenocarcinoma and current treatment with Anlotinib, it’s essential to monitor any changes in your bowel movements closely, as they can indicate various health issues.
1. Stool Color and Consistency: The changes in your stool consistency—from watery to soft, and the presence of yellow, brown, and black specks—can be influenced by several factors, including your diet and medications. Spinach, for instance, can lead to greenish stool due to its high chlorophyll content. The black specks could be from the nuts you’ve consumed or could indicate the presence of digested blood, especially if you have been experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort. Yellow stool can sometimes indicate malabsorption issues, where your body is not adequately absorbing fats, which could be a side effect of your cancer treatment or related to your overall digestive health.
2. Impact of Anlotinib on Gastrointestinal Health: Anlotinib, like many cancer treatments, can have gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms can lead to changes in stool consistency and color. If you are experiencing significant discomfort or changes in your bowel habits, it is crucial to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your treatment plan or provide supportive care to manage these side effects.
3. Risk of Gastrointestinal Cancers: While your recent PET scan did not show any alarming findings aside from the lung nodules, it’s understandable to be concerned about the possibility of other cancers, such as gastric or colorectal cancer, especially given your symptoms. However, the presence of abdominal discomfort and changes in stool alone does not definitively indicate cancer. Many benign conditions, such as infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or even dietary changes, can cause similar symptoms. It is essential to communicate your concerns with your oncologist, who may recommend further evaluation, such as imaging studies or endoscopy, to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while the changes in your stool color and consistency can be concerning, they are not uncommon in individuals undergoing cancer treatment. It is vital to maintain open communication with your healthcare team about any new or worsening symptoms. They can provide you with the best guidance tailored to your specific situation, ensuring that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress can also support your digestive health during this challenging time.
