Warm compress for the eyes?

Hello Doctor: Two days ago, I was diagnosed with COVID-19 and have been experiencing a fever of up to 39.6 degrees Celsius.
However, I have continued to use a heated eye mask (which is approximately 40 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes) before bed as I usually do.
I would like to know if using the heated eye mask while having a high fever could cause any harm to my eyes.
Additionally, do I need to seek medical attention for this? Thank you, Doctor!

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Xiaoxiao: There should not be any significant impact.
Please do not worry too much.
However, if you experience any discomfort or blurred vision, it is advisable to seek medical attention for an examination.

When it comes to using heat therapy, such as a heated eye mask, during a high fever, particularly in the context of a recent COVID-19 diagnosis, there are several important considerations to keep in mind.
First and foremost, it's essential to understand that while heat therapy can provide comfort and relief for certain conditions, using it during a high fever can potentially lead to complications. When your body temperature rises significantly, as it does during a fever (in your case, reaching 39.6 degrees Celsius), your body is already in a state of stress. Applying additional heat to the body, especially around sensitive areas like the eyes, can exacerbate feelings of discomfort and may lead to overheating.
The primary concern with using a heated eye mask during a fever is the risk of further elevating your body temperature. This can lead to dehydration, increased heart rate, and additional strain on your body as it tries to fight off the infection. Moreover, the skin around the eyes is particularly delicate, and excessive heat can cause irritation or burns, especially if the mask is too hot or used for too long.
In your case, since you have been using the heated eye mask consistently, it is crucial to monitor how your eyes and overall body feel. If you experience any discomfort, redness, swelling, or unusual sensations in your eyes, it would be wise to discontinue use immediately. Additionally, if your fever persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms such as severe headache, vision changes, or increased sensitivity around the eyes, seeking medical attention is advisable.

As for whether you should see a doctor, if your fever continues for more than a few days or if you experience any concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation and determine if any further treatment is necessary. Given your recent COVID-19 diagnosis, it is particularly important to keep your healthcare provider informed about your symptoms and any changes in your condition.

In summary, while heat therapy can be beneficial for certain eye conditions, using it during a high fever is generally not recommended due to the potential risks involved. Always prioritize your overall health and comfort, and do not hesitate to seek medical advice if you have any concerns about your symptoms or treatment methods.
