Abnormal discharge
This year, I underwent two separate surgeries for uterine fibroids and polyps.
Since then, my menstrual cycle has been normal, but every month after my period ends, I experience a yellowish discharge that resembles urine.
The amount is somewhat significant, requiring the use of panty liners, and it occurs several times a day.
When there is no discharge, the color is normal and clear.
This condition has persisted for almost a year.
The polyps were discovered during a hysteroscopy, and the doctor mentioned that aside from the polyps, both the uterus and ovaries appear normal.
However, can a hysteroscopy visualize the ovaries and fallopian tubes? Could there be other issues present, or is there a possibility of inflammation or infection? Is it normal for this discharge to occur every cycle? Could this affect my ability to conceive? Thank you.

Hello, it is recommended to first perform a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the uterine cavity, along with a Pap smear to determine the cause.

After undergoing surgeries for uterine fibroids and polyps, it is understandable to have concerns about any abnormal discharge that you may be experiencing. The presence of yellow discharge, particularly after menstrual cycles, can be a common occurrence for some women, but it is essential to differentiate between what is normal and what may indicate an underlying issue.
Firstly, it is important to note that the discharge you describe, particularly if it is yellow and resembles urine, could be due to several factors. One possibility is that it is a result of the healing process after your surgeries. Surgical procedures on the uterus can lead to changes in the vaginal flora and the healing of tissues, which may result in increased discharge. The yellow color could be due to the presence of old blood or tissue that is being expelled as part of the healing process.
However, if the discharge is accompanied by a foul odor, itching, or any signs of irritation, it could suggest an infection. Infections such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection can cause abnormal discharge and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. It is also worth noting that hormonal changes throughout your menstrual cycle can affect the consistency and color of vaginal discharge.
Regarding your concern about whether the hysteroscopy (the procedure used to examine the uterus) can visualize the ovaries and fallopian tubes, it is important to clarify that while hysteroscopy is an excellent tool for examining the inside of the uterus, it does not provide a direct view of the ovaries or fallopian tubes. If there are concerns about these structures, additional imaging studies such as an ultrasound or MRI may be necessary.
As for the duration of your symptoms, experiencing yellow discharge for nearly a year after surgery is not typical and warrants further investigation. It is advisable to consult with your gynecologist to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend tests such as a pelvic exam, cultures, or imaging studies to rule out any infections or other underlying conditions.
In terms of fertility, while some discharge variations can be normal, any persistent abnormal discharge should be evaluated, especially if you are considering pregnancy. Certain infections or conditions can affect fertility, so addressing these concerns with your healthcare provider is crucial.
In summary, while some yellow discharge can be a normal part of the healing process after uterine surgery, it is essential to monitor for any additional symptoms that may indicate an infection or other complications. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring your reproductive health and addressing any concerns you may have about your menstrual cycle and fertility.
