Flashes of light in the eyes?
Hello, for more than a month now, I have been experiencing yellow-green flashes in my right eye, appearing as curved lines (somewhat resembling elongated lightning bolts) that occur intermittently.
They can appear in bright areas as well, sometimes occurring multiple times a day.
Each episode lasts about 1 to 3 seconds, and sometimes they appear and disappear continuously for a period of time.
My vision hasn't changed, and I have myopia of -5.00 diopters along with floaters.
Could this possibly indicate a problem with the retina, or is it related to the vitreous? During my examination in March, there were no new abnormalities in the retina.
Should I consider getting checked again soon? Thank you.

Hello, Apple: This is likely due to vitreous traction on the retina causing the discharge.
It is recommended that you visit an ophthalmologist for an examination.
If everything is fine, you can rest assured.

Flashing lights in your vision can be a concerning symptom, and understanding their potential causes is crucial for determining whether you need to seek further medical attention. Based on your description of experiencing yellow-green flashing lines that resemble lightning, it is important to consider several possible underlying issues.
1. Vitreous Detachment: One common cause of flashing lights is vitreous detachment, where the vitreous gel inside the eye begins to pull away from the retina. This can create sensations of flashes or floaters in your vision. Given that you have a history of floaters (known as "myodesopsia"), this could be a contributing factor. Vitreous detachment is often benign, but it can sometimes lead to more serious conditions.
2. Retinal Issues: While your previous examination in March showed no new abnormalities in the retina, the appearance of new symptoms warrants further investigation. Flashes can sometimes indicate retinal tears or detachment, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow in your peripheral vision, or a curtain-like effect over your vision. These conditions require immediate medical attention to prevent permanent vision loss.
3. Migraine-Related Visual Disturbances: Although you mentioned that you do not have a history of migraines, it is worth noting that some individuals experience visual disturbances known as "aura" without the headache component. These can manifest as flashing lights or zigzag patterns in the vision. If you notice that the flashes coincide with headaches or other migraine symptoms, this could be a possibility.
4. Ocular Migraines: Similar to the previous point, ocular migraines can cause temporary visual disturbances, including flashes of light. These typically resolve within a short period and do not usually indicate a serious underlying condition.
5. Other Causes: Other potential causes for flashing lights can include retinal vascular issues, such as retinal vein occlusion or arterial occlusion, which can lead to visual disturbances. Additionally, systemic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes can also affect vision and should be monitored closely.
Given your symptoms of intermittent flashing lights, especially if they are occurring frequently and without a clear trigger, it is advisable to seek a comprehensive eye examination. An ophthalmologist can perform a detailed assessment, including a dilated fundus examination, to evaluate the health of your retina and vitreous. They may also consider imaging studies, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), to get a clearer picture of the retinal structure.
In summary, while your previous examination did not reveal any new issues, the emergence of these flashing lights, particularly with their frequency and nature, suggests that further evaluation is warranted. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in vision. If you experience any additional symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, changes in your peripheral vision, or any other concerning signs, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. Your eye health is paramount, and timely intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
