Why hasn't my period come?

I had intercourse with my boyfriend on January 13th, and we used a condom.
However, as of today, October 23rd, my period still hasn't arrived.
Currently, I don't have any noticeable symptoms, but I'm concerned about the delay in my menstruation due to the stress from work and school.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/10/23

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and breastfeeding, among others.
Additionally, the failure rate of contraception with consistent condom use is over 5%.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist if symptoms persist or worsen to determine if there is a hormonal imbalance or other underlying issues.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to understanding why your period is late, there are several factors to consider. Menstrual irregularities can be caused by a variety of reasons, and it’s important to approach this issue with a comprehensive understanding of the potential causes.

Firstly, it’s crucial to note that stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. Both work and academic pressures can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may delay ovulation or even cause your period to be skipped altogether. The hypothalamus, which regulates the hormones that control your menstrual cycle, can be affected by stress, leading to irregularities.

Another important factor to consider is pregnancy. Although you mentioned that you used protection during intercourse, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If there is any chance of pregnancy, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test for confirmation. If the test is positive, you should schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and prenatal care.

In addition to stress and pregnancy, other medical conditions can also lead to a late period. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and other hormonal imbalances can disrupt your menstrual cycle. If you have a history of irregular periods or other symptoms such as weight changes, excessive hair growth, or acne, it may be worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.

Lifestyle factors can also play a role in menstrual irregularities. Significant weight loss or gain, changes in diet, excessive exercise, or even travel can affect your cycle. If you've recently made changes to your routine or lifestyle, this could be a contributing factor.

If your period remains absent for an extended period, or if you experience other concerning symptoms such as severe pain, unusual discharge, or significant mood changes, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic exam, or imaging studies if necessary.

In summary, a late period can be attributed to various factors, including stress, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, lifestyle changes, and underlying medical conditions. It’s important to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if your period does not return or if you have any concerns. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your individual health needs.
