20 Days Post-Cataract Surgery: Why Is My Vision Still Blurry? - Ophthalmology

Share to:

It has been 20 days since my cataract surgery, and my vision is still blurry. I am very worried?

I have high myopia (approximately 800-900 degrees) and have undergone laser eye surgery.
In recent years, during examinations, cataracts were discovered along with macular degeneration.
Recently, I had cataract surgery on my left eye (due to claustrophobia, I was under general anesthesia during the procedure), but it has been 20 days post-surgery and my vision is still blurry.
There is no stinging or tearing, but the images I see are covered with a layer of haze.
During my follow-up appointment in the first week post-surgery, the doctor mentioned that the blurriness is due to swelling in the eye.
I am very worried and afraid that the surgery may have failed.
My next follow-up appointment is in 10 days, but I am currently in isolation due to a confirmed diagnosis and cannot go to the hospital.
I am also concerned about potential delays in receiving medical care.

Due to the inability to assess the condition of your eyes, I am unable to determine the specific issue.
Thank you for your understanding.

It's understandable to feel anxious about your vision after cataract surgery, especially given your history of high myopia and previous laser eye surgery. Let's break down your concerns regarding the blurry vision you're experiencing 20 days post-surgery.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that cataract surgery is generally a safe and effective procedure, but recovery can vary significantly from person to person. Blurry vision after cataract surgery can be attributed to several factors, and it's not uncommon for patients to experience some degree of visual disturbance during the healing process.

1. Postoperative Swelling: As your doctor mentioned during your first follow-up appointment, swelling of the cornea or surrounding tissues can lead to blurry vision. This is a common occurrence and usually resolves within a few weeks as the eye heals. If the swelling persists beyond the expected timeframe, it may require further evaluation.

2. Residual Cataract: In some cases, a condition known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO) can occur after cataract surgery. This happens when the thin membrane that holds the lens in place becomes cloudy, leading to blurry vision. If this is the case, a simple outpatient procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy can be performed to restore clear vision.

3. Refractive Error: Given your history of high myopia, it's possible that your vision may not be perfectly corrected after surgery. Sometimes, the new lens may not fully compensate for the previous refractive error, leading to residual blur. This can often be addressed with glasses or contact lenses, or in some cases, additional surgical options may be considered.

4. Macular Health: Since you have a history of macular degeneration, it's crucial to monitor the health of your macula post-surgery. Any underlying conditions can affect your visual recovery. If you notice any changes in your central vision, such as distortion or dark spots, it's essential to communicate this to your eye care provider.

5. Healing Time: Recovery from cataract surgery can take time, and while many patients notice significant improvement in their vision within days, others may take weeks to achieve optimal clarity. It's essential to give your eyes the time they need to heal.

Given that you are currently in isolation and unable to attend your follow-up appointment, I recommend reaching out to your eye care provider via phone or telemedicine if possible. They may be able to provide guidance based on your symptoms and history. If you experience any sudden changes in vision, increased pain, or other concerning symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

In the meantime, ensure you are following your postoperative care instructions, including using prescribed eye drops to reduce inflammation and prevent infection. Avoid rubbing your eyes and protect them from bright lights or irritants.

In summary, while blurry vision 20 days post-cataract surgery can be concerning, it is often a part of the healing process. Keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider, and don't hesitate to seek further evaluation if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Your vision is important, and addressing any issues promptly can help ensure the best possible outcome.
