Excessive Hair Growth: Should You Check Your Testosterone Levels? - Urology

Pubic hair grows quickly?

I've been troubled by this issue for quite some time.
If I don't sweep the floor for a while, there are a lot of body hairs.
I feel like the growth rate is a bit too fast; I also have quite a bit of leg hair, and facial hair is growing on my cheeks as well as sideburns.
Should I get my testosterone levels checked? Are there any medications that can help suppress it a bit? Should I go to a urology clinic for a blood test?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Excessive hair growth, also known as hirsutism, can be a source of concern for many individuals, particularly when it appears in areas where hair growth is typically minimal, such as the face, chest, or back. Your observation regarding the rapid growth of body hair, including pubic hair and facial hair, raises valid questions about hormonal imbalances, particularly concerning testosterone levels.

Testosterone is a hormone that plays a significant role in the development of male characteristics, but it is also present in females, albeit at lower levels. Elevated testosterone levels in women can lead to symptoms such as excessive hair growth, acne, and irregular menstrual cycles. This condition can be associated with several underlying issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal gland disorders, or other hormonal imbalances.

Given your concerns about excessive hair growth, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an endocrinologist or a urologist, who can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether a blood test to check your testosterone levels is necessary. This test can help identify whether your testosterone levels are indeed elevated and if they are contributing to your symptoms.

In terms of treatment options, there are several approaches to managing excessive hair growth. Medications such as oral contraceptives can help regulate hormonal levels and reduce hair growth in women. Anti-androgens, such as spironolactone, are also commonly prescribed to block the effects of testosterone on hair follicles, thereby reducing hair growth. Additionally, topical treatments like eflornithine cream can slow down facial hair growth.

It's important to note that while medications can help manage symptoms, they may take time to show results, and ongoing treatment may be necessary. In some cases, individuals may also consider hair removal methods such as laser hair removal or electrolysis for more permanent solutions.

Furthermore, lifestyle factors can also play a role in managing excessive hair growth. Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can help regulate hormone levels and improve overall health. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness or yoga, may also be beneficial, as stress can exacerbate hormonal imbalances.

In summary, if you are experiencing excessive hair growth, it is advisable to seek medical advice to evaluate your testosterone levels and explore potential underlying causes. A healthcare professional can guide you through the appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment options tailored to your specific situation. Remember, addressing hormonal imbalances can take time, and a comprehensive approach that includes both medical treatment and lifestyle modifications may yield the best results.
