Regarding eye problems?
Hello, doctor.
I have been using my phone a lot without paying attention to my eyes, and recently I've noticed some blurry black spots when looking at my phone.
I started observing my eyes and found several issues that I would like to ask you about.
1.
When I close my left eye, I see a small halo, and when I open my eye, that halo turns into a small black spot that takes about ten to twenty seconds to disappear.
It reappears when I blink.
2.
I feel that reflections have become more pronounced and brighter.
I'm not sure if I just didn't notice it before or if there's a problem with my eyes.
3.
Both eyes experience a phenomenon similar to flickering light bulbs, as if there is a fan spinning beneath the bulb.
The images I see have a slight shaking sensation.
I can feel this both outdoors and under artificial light.
It is most noticeable at night when I go to the bathroom and then look out at the sky; the entire sky appears to be flickering.
4.
It seems like I can see a light drizzle with both eyes, even when it’s not raining.
I can see this in both indoor and outdoor settings, especially in dark or muted colors.
Regarding symptoms 3 and 4 combined, could this be a sign of retinal detachment?
5.
When I look at things with just my left or right eye, the area near the corner of my eye appears blurry with small light spots and tiny black dots.
After a while, blinking helps it return to normal.
Is this normal? If not, what kind of conditions could it indicate?
6.
When I close my eyes, sometimes I see C-shaped, straight, or horizontal lines of light for a few seconds.
7.
Is this floaters? When I look at the blue sky with my left eye, I see a small transparent line, small circles, and many tiny light spots moving around.
Sometimes I see transparent lines and light spots forming a Z shape.
In my right eye, I see transparent small circles and light spots moving around, and occasionally small black dots.
8.
My eyes often feel sore, dry, and swollen.
9.
Doctor, what symptoms might indicate retinal thinning or holes? I read that vitreous degeneration is not a concern for a healthy retina, but one should be cautious with an unhealthy retina.
I apologize for the many questions, and I appreciate your explanations and responses in advance.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello: These issues may require an examination at an ophthalmology clinic.
They are likely related to the vitreous or caused by eye strain, and are not indicative of retinal detachment.
Retinal thinning or holes may sometimes go unnoticed, and a dilated eye exam is necessary to determine this.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your detailed observations regarding your eye health. It’s clear that you are experiencing a range of symptoms that can be concerning, and I appreciate your proactive approach in seeking clarification. Let’s address your symptoms one by one and discuss the potential implications for your retinal health.
1. Visual Disturbances: The small light circles and black spots you observe, especially when blinking or closing your eyes, could be related to several factors, including the presence of floaters or visual migraines. Floaters are common and often harmless, but they can sometimes indicate changes in the vitreous gel of the eye or retinal issues, especially if they are new or increasing in number.
2. Increased Brightness and Glare: If you notice that reflections and bright lights appear more pronounced, this could be a sign of changes in your lens or cornea. Conditions like cataracts can cause increased glare and sensitivity to light, but this typically occurs with age or prolonged exposure to UV light.
3. Flashing Lights: The sensation of seeing flashes or flickering lights, particularly in the peripheral vision, can be a warning sign of retinal detachment or other serious conditions. This symptom warrants immediate attention, as it can indicate that the retina is being pulled or stretched.
4. Seeing Rain-like Patterns: The perception of seeing "rain" or small particles in your vision, especially in low-light conditions, could be related to the presence of floaters or even visual disturbances associated with migraines. However, if these symptoms are new or accompanied by other visual changes, they should be evaluated by an eye care professional.
5. Blurred Vision and Light Spots: Experiencing blurriness and light spots, particularly in the corners of your vision, can be indicative of retinal issues or even corneal irregularities. It’s essential to monitor these symptoms closely, especially if they persist or worsen.
6. C-shaped or Linear Light Patterns: Seeing shapes or lines when your eyes are closed can be a normal phenomenon, often related to the brain's interpretation of visual stimuli. However, if these experiences are frequent or accompanied by other symptoms, it may be worth discussing further with your eye doctor.
7. Floaters: The presence of floaters, especially if they are new or changing, should be evaluated. While floaters are common and usually benign, a sudden increase in floaters can indicate a retinal tear or detachment, which requires urgent care.
8. Eye Discomfort: Symptoms of eye strain, such as soreness or a feeling of pressure, can result from prolonged screen time, dry eyes, or uncorrected vision problems. It’s essential to take regular breaks and ensure that your prescription is up to date.
9. Retinal Health: Regarding your concerns about retinal thinning or holes, symptoms can vary. Some individuals may not experience noticeable symptoms until significant changes occur. Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring retinal health, especially if you have risk factors such as high myopia.
In summary, while some of your symptoms may be benign, others could indicate more serious conditions that require prompt evaluation. I recommend scheduling an appointment with an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye examination, including a dilated fundus exam, to assess the health of your retina and rule out any serious issues.
In the meantime, practice good eye hygiene by taking breaks from screens, using artificial tears if you experience dryness, and protecting your eyes from UV light. Your eye health is paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
