Menstrual regulation medication consultation?

Hello doctor, I started taking Yaz on the second day of my menstrual period on October 22, and I am still experiencing light bleeding today, November 2.
I need to use panty liners.
I have never had this prolonged bleeding before.
Is this situation normal? Also, I would like to ask if I need to wait until my period is completely over before continuing to take tranexamic acid, which I was using before starting Yaz.
Can I still take tranexamic acid while on Yaz, or should I just take them at different times (morning and evening)? Thank you, doctor.

Nìmíng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/11/02

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

For issues related to menstrual flow, please consult a gynecologist.
It is recommended to start taking tranexamic acid only after menstruation has completely ended.

When it comes to menstrual regulation medications like "悅姿" (Yuezi), which is likely a form of hormonal contraceptive, it is not uncommon to experience irregular bleeding or spotting, especially during the initial weeks of use. This is often referred to as "breakthrough bleeding" and can occur as your body adjusts to the new hormone levels. Since you started taking the medication on the second day of your menstrual cycle, it’s possible that your body is still adapting, which can lead to prolonged bleeding. However, if the bleeding continues for an extended period or becomes heavy, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding your previous use of "傳美酸" (Tranexamic Acid), which is often used for skin whitening or to manage melasma, it is generally recommended to wait until your menstrual bleeding has completely stopped before resuming any new medications. This is to ensure that your body has stabilized and to avoid any potential interactions or side effects that could arise from combining medications during a time of hormonal fluctuation.

As for the interaction between "悅姿" and "傳美酸," there is no direct contraindication for taking these medications together; however, it is essential to consider the timing and how your body responds. If you choose to take them together, spacing them out (for example, taking one in the morning and the other at night) may help minimize any potential side effects. Nevertheless, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that this approach is safe and appropriate for your specific health situation.

In terms of skin care while on these medications, it is important to maintain a gentle and consistent skincare routine. Hormonal changes can affect your skin, leading to increased sensitivity or changes in oil production. Therefore, using non-comedogenic and hydrating products is advisable. If you notice any adverse reactions or changes in your skin condition, such as increased redness or irritation, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist.

In summary, experiencing prolonged bleeding while starting a new hormonal medication is not unusual, but it should be monitored. Waiting for your menstrual cycle to normalize before resuming other medications like "傳美酸" is prudent. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice tailored to your health needs, especially when dealing with multiple medications and skin care concerns.
