Symptoms of COVID-19

Can a doctor tell me if tailbone pain can occur with COVID-19? I didn't have these symptoms before, but they started after I got sick.
I'm particularly concerned about a noticeable bump above my tailbone that I can feel.
It makes it difficult to sleep or sit properly.
If this is caused by COVID-19, will it return to normal after recovery?

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

COVID-19 can cause muscle soreness in the lower back and limbs, which should improve after recovery from the infection.

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been associated with a wide range of symptoms, affecting various systems in the body. While the most common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell, some patients have reported experiencing musculoskeletal pain, including discomfort in the tailbone area (coccyx).
Tailbone pain, or coccydynia, can arise from several factors, including trauma, prolonged sitting, or conditions affecting the surrounding muscles and ligaments. In the context of COVID-19, it is plausible that the systemic inflammatory response triggered by the virus could lead to increased sensitivity or pain in various parts of the body, including the tailbone.
The specific symptom of tailbone pain during a COVID-19 infection may not be directly caused by the virus itself but could be a result of several factors:
1. Prolonged Bed Rest: Many individuals with COVID-19 experience fatigue and may spend extended periods lying down or sitting. This can lead to pressure on the tailbone, resulting in discomfort or pain.

2. Muscle and Joint Pain: COVID-19 can cause generalized muscle and joint pain, which may contribute to discomfort in the tailbone area. This is often referred to as myalgia and can be part of the body's inflammatory response to the virus.

3. Postural Changes: If you are experiencing fatigue or weakness due to COVID-19, you may unconsciously alter your posture, which can place additional stress on the tailbone and surrounding structures.

4. Inflammation: The inflammatory response associated with COVID-19 can exacerbate existing conditions or lead to new pain syndromes, including coccydynia.

Regarding the specific concern about a noticeable protrusion above the tailbone, this could be a sign of several conditions, such as a pilonidal cyst, a bony prominence, or even a muscle spasm. It is essential to have this evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if it is causing significant discomfort or affecting your ability to sit or sleep properly.

As for recovery, many individuals report that symptoms related to COVID-19, including musculoskeletal pain, improve over time as they recover from the infection. However, the timeline for recovery can vary widely among individuals. It is crucial to engage in gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, maintain good posture, and avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces to alleviate tailbone pain.

If the pain persists after recovery from COVID-19, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend physical therapy, pain management strategies, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of the discomfort.

In summary, while COVID-19 can potentially lead to tailbone pain due to various indirect factors, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. With appropriate care and management, many individuals can expect to return to their normal activities and alleviate their discomfort.
