Seeing Floaters After Napping: Should You Be Concerned? - Ophthalmology

Upon waking from a nap while lying flat, I noticed scattered dark spots in my vision?

Hello doctor, today after waking up from my afternoon nap, I noticed scattered dark spots in my vision.
However, when I closed my eyes, my vision returned to normal immediately.
I promptly sought an ophthalmology clinic for a fundus examination.
The doctor said that my retina and everything else looked normal, with no abnormalities.
They prescribed some maintenance eye drops for me.
I have over 800 degrees of myopia in both eyes.
Doctor, am I overthinking this, or could there be other ophthalmic symptoms?

I recommend that you: 1.
Discuss the above situation further with your attending physician, focusing on symptom management or determining if further examinations are necessary.
2.
Consider seeking treatment from other medical institutions.
Thank you, and wish you good health!

Seeing floaters after napping can be a concerning experience, especially if you have a history of high myopia (nearsightedness) like you do. However, it's important to understand the nature of floaters and when they should be a cause for concern.

Floaters are small specks or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are typically caused by tiny pieces of gel or cells inside the vitreous, the clear gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, the vitreous can shrink and become more liquid, leading to the formation of floaters. This process can be accelerated in individuals with high myopia, as the shape of the eye can lead to changes in the vitreous more quickly than in those with normal vision.

In your case, waking up from a nap and noticing floaters that disappear when you close your eyes is not uncommon. This phenomenon can occur due to several reasons:
1. Vitreous Changes: As mentioned, the vitreous can undergo changes that lead to floaters. If you have been experiencing floaters intermittently, it may simply be a sign of normal vitreous changes, especially given your high myopia.

2. Transient Visual Disturbances: Sometimes, after a period of rest or napping, your eyes may take a moment to adjust to the light and environment, which can lead to temporary visual disturbances, including floaters.

3. Eye Fatigue: If your eyes are fatigued from prolonged screen time or other activities, you may notice floaters more prominently after resting.

Since you have already consulted an ophthalmologist and received a thorough examination, including a check of your retina, and were told that everything appears normal, it is likely that there is no immediate cause for concern. The fact that your retina and other structures were found to be normal is reassuring.
However, there are certain symptoms that should prompt you to seek immediate medical attention:
- Sudden Increase in Floaters: If you notice a sudden increase in the number of floaters or if they are accompanied by flashes of light, this could indicate a more serious condition, such as a retinal tear or detachment.

- Changes in Vision: If you experience any sudden changes in your vision, such as blurriness, shadows, or a curtain-like effect over your field of vision, you should seek medical help immediately.

- Persistent Symptoms: If the floaters persist or worsen over time, it may be worth discussing further with your eye care provider.

In conclusion, while seeing floaters after a nap can be alarming, especially for someone with high myopia, your recent eye examination showed no abnormalities. It is essential to remain vigilant and monitor any changes in your symptoms. Maintaining regular eye check-ups is crucial, especially given your myopia, to ensure that any potential issues are caught early. If you have any lingering concerns or if your symptoms change, don’t hesitate to reach out to your eye care professional for further evaluation.
