Post-Retinal Laser Surgery: Is Flashing Normal? - Ophthalmology

Post-Retinal Laser Surgery

Hello, doctor! I noticed flashes of light and went to the ophthalmologist for an examination, where I discovered a hole.
I immediately underwent laser surgery.
The next day, I still see flashes of light.
Is this normal, or should I wait two weeks for the wound to stabilize before the flashes stop? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: Flashes occur due to the vitreous pulling on the retina, so even after laser treatment, there may still be some pulling at the site of the tear, which can cause flashes to persist.
However, once the laser treatment stabilizes, it becomes less likely to cause further damage.
Flashes may change over time and sometimes gradually diminish.

After undergoing retinal laser surgery, experiencing flashes of light can be a common occurrence, especially in the immediate postoperative period. This phenomenon is often related to the mechanical changes and healing processes that occur within the eye following surgery.
When a retinal tear or detachment is treated with laser surgery, the laser creates a scar that helps to seal the retina to the underlying tissue. However, during the healing process, the retina may still be sensitive, and the mechanical tension from the surrounding tissues can lead to sensations of flashing lights. This is particularly true if there was any pre-existing vitreous traction, which can continue to exert pressure on the retina even after the surgery.

In your case, since you are still experiencing flashes the day after the procedure, it is not unusual. Many patients report similar experiences in the days and weeks following retinal laser surgery. The flashes may gradually decrease as the eye heals and the tension on the retina diminishes. Typically, if the surgery was successful and there are no complications, these flashes should lessen over time, particularly as the retina stabilizes.

It is important to monitor the nature of these flashes. If they become more frequent, change in character, or are accompanied by new symptoms such as an increase in floaters, a shadow in your vision, or a decrease in visual acuity, it is crucial to contact your ophthalmologist immediately. These could be signs of complications, such as a new retinal tear or detachment.

Regarding your question about the two-week mark, while many patients notice a reduction in symptoms as they approach their follow-up appointment, individual healing times can vary. It is essential to follow your doctor's advice regarding postoperative care and attend all scheduled follow-ups. Your ophthalmologist will assess the stability of the retina and the healing process during these visits.

In addition, eye fatigue can also contribute to visual disturbances, including flashes. Prolonged screen time or strain can exacerbate symptoms, so it is advisable to take regular breaks and practice good eye hygiene to minimize fatigue.

In summary, experiencing flashes after retinal laser surgery can be normal, especially in the early days post-operation. However, continuous monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are essential to ensure that your recovery is on track and to address any potential complications promptly. Always prioritize follow-up appointments and do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor with any concerns about your symptoms.
