Bleeding with mucus after anal intercourse?

Hello, doctor.
As mentioned, I have had anal intercourse in the past, and I tried it again yesterday.
Afterward, I experienced diarrhea for about 5-10 minutes in the bathroom.
This morning, after using the restroom, I noticed some light yellow mucus with blood streaks on the toilet paper, and I also felt a slight stinging sensation during bowel movements.
I would like to know what this could possibly be.

There may be trauma to the anus/rectum.

Experiencing rectal bleeding and mucus after anal intercourse can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and implications of these symptoms. Based on your description, the presence of yellowish mucus and blood, along with some pain during bowel movements, may indicate a few possible conditions.

Firstly, it’s not uncommon for anal intercourse to cause minor trauma to the anal canal or rectum, especially if there was insufficient lubrication or if the activity was vigorous. This trauma can lead to small tears in the lining of the rectum, known as anal fissures, which can cause bleeding and pain during bowel movements. The blood you observed on the toilet paper could be a result of such a fissure, and the yellow mucus might be a sign of irritation or inflammation in the area.

Another possibility is that the bleeding could be related to hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the rectal area that can become aggravated during anal intercourse. If you have a history of hemorrhoids, they may become more symptomatic after such activities, leading to bleeding and discomfort.

In some cases, the presence of mucus and blood could indicate an underlying condition such as proctitis, which is inflammation of the rectum that can be caused by infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or sexually transmitted infections. If you have had unprotected anal intercourse, it’s essential to consider the possibility of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that could lead to rectal inflammation.

Given these possibilities, here are some recommendations for managing your symptoms and ensuring your health:
1. Avoid Further Irritation: Until you have a clearer understanding of the cause of your symptoms, it may be wise to avoid anal intercourse to prevent further irritation or injury.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If the bleeding persists, increases, or if you experience severe pain, fever, or changes in bowel habits, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

3. Use Lubrication: If you decide to engage in anal intercourse again in the future, ensure that you use plenty of lubrication to minimize the risk of trauma.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as a gastroenterologist or a proctologist, for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend further tests, such as a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, to rule out any serious conditions.

5. Consider STI Testing: If you have had unprotected anal intercourse, consider getting tested for STIs, as some infections can lead to rectal symptoms.

6. Maintain Good Hygiene: After anal intercourse, ensure proper hygiene to reduce the risk of infections. This includes cleaning the area gently and thoroughly.

In summary, while minor bleeding and mucus after anal intercourse can often be attributed to trauma or irritation, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and prevent complications.
