Nipple pain with discharge?
Hello, I discovered a lump under the left side of my left breast yesterday.
It hurts when pressed, but it doesn't hurt otherwise.
I also noticed that when I squeeze both nipples, there are small particles around them that produce a white discharge, which is odorless.
What could this situation be? Thank you.

When it comes to breast health, the presence of painful nodules and discharge can understandably cause concern. Based on your description of a painful lump in your left breast and the white discharge from the surrounding areas of both nipples, there are several potential causes to consider.
Firstly, the painful lump you are experiencing could be a benign condition such as a fibrocystic change or a fibroadenoma. Fibrocystic breast changes are common and often occur due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly during the menstrual cycle. These changes can lead to the formation of cysts or nodules that may be tender to the touch. Fibroadenomas, on the other hand, are solid, non-cancerous lumps that can also cause discomfort.
Another possibility is that the lump could be related to an infection or inflammation, such as mastitis or a breast abscess. Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue that can occur in women who are breastfeeding, but it can also affect women who are not. Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes fever. If the infection leads to the formation of an abscess, it may present as a painful lump that requires medical intervention.
The white discharge you mentioned could be due to several factors. One common cause is a condition known as galactorrhea, which is the production of breast milk or a milk-like discharge unrelated to breastfeeding. This can be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or even stress. Additionally, if there is a blockage in the milk ducts, it can lead to discharge, which may be accompanied by pain or discomfort.
It is also important to consider the possibility of a more serious condition, such as a breast tumor. While most breast lumps are benign, any new or unusual lump should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out breast cancer, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as changes in the skin, persistent pain, or changes in the shape or size of the breast.
Given the complexity of breast conditions, it is crucial to seek medical advice for a thorough evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound to assess the lump further. Additionally, they may perform a physical examination and possibly a biopsy if there is any concern about the nature of the lump.
In summary, the combination of a painful breast lump and discharge can arise from various benign conditions, infections, or, less commonly, malignancies. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Early evaluation and intervention can help alleviate concerns and ensure optimal breast health.
