If you are scheduled to receive the second dose of the HPV vaccine and have been diagnosed with COVID-19, should you proceed with the vaccination as planned?

Hello, doctor.
I am scheduled to receive the second dose of the nine-valent HPV vaccine on November 20th this week.
However, I have just tested positive for COVID-19 (mild symptoms).
After completing my isolation and testing negative, I will be delayed by about ten days from the original date for the second dose of the HPV vaccine.
Should I rush to get the second dose of the HPV vaccine? Will there be any interaction between having COVID-19 and receiving the vaccine? Thank you.

Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/11/23

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it's okay to extend for 10 days.
Wishing you good health.

When considering whether to receive the HPV vaccine after recovering from COVID-19, there are several important factors to take into account. First and foremost, it is essential to understand the nature of both infections and how they interact with the immune system.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to various health issues, including genital warts and cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine is designed to protect against the most common and high-risk strains of the virus, significantly reducing the risk of developing these conditions. On the other hand, COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and primarily affects the respiratory system, although it can have systemic effects on the body.

In your case, you mentioned that you are recovering from a mild case of COVID-19 and are scheduled to receive the second dose of the nine-valent HPV vaccine. It is generally recommended to wait until you have fully recovered from any acute illness before receiving vaccinations. This is to ensure that your immune system is functioning optimally and can mount an effective response to the vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that individuals who have had COVID-19 can receive the vaccine once they have met the criteria for discontinuing isolation and are feeling well. If you have tested negative and are no longer symptomatic, it is likely safe to proceed with the vaccination. However, if you are still experiencing any lingering symptoms or if your healthcare provider has advised you to wait, it may be prudent to postpone the vaccination until you are fully recovered.

Regarding the potential interactions between COVID-19 and the HPV vaccine, current research indicates that there is no evidence to suggest that having had COVID-19 negatively impacts the efficacy of the HPV vaccine. Vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens, and the immune response generated by the HPV vaccine should not be hindered by a previous COVID-19 infection.

Moreover, receiving the HPV vaccine after recovering from COVID-19 can be beneficial, as it will help protect you against HPV-related diseases, especially if you are at risk due to previous infections. The timing of your vaccination is also crucial; it is generally recommended to complete the HPV vaccine series within a specific timeframe to ensure maximum protection.

In summary, if you have recovered from COVID-19 and are feeling well, it is advisable to proceed with the HPV vaccination as scheduled. However, if you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can assess your overall health status and provide guidance on the best timing for your vaccination.

In addition, it is essential to continue practicing safe behaviors, such as using condoms and having regular screenings, to further reduce the risk of HPV transmission and related complications. Vaccination is a crucial step in protecting your health, but it should be part of a comprehensive approach to sexual health and wellness.
