Cataract treatment with dermatological steroids and dye laser therapy issues?
Hello, doctor.
Last month, I was diagnosed with mild cataracts in my left eye.
I have two questions: 1.
Does receiving corticosteroid injections from a dermatologist worsen cataracts? 2.
I undergo dye laser treatment for scars on my face every month.
Will this affect my cataracts?

Corticosteroids must be used in large amounts and for an extended period to cause cataracts or glaucoma, so it is not possible to determine whether your treatment dosage will lead to significant cataract formation or worsen existing cataracts.
As for laser treatment, the eyes are generally protected, and there should not be any significant side effects.

Cataracts are a common eye condition characterized by the clouding of the lens, which can lead to blurred vision and other visual disturbances. As you have already been diagnosed with mild cataracts in your left eye, it's understandable that you are concerned about the potential impact of steroid injections and dye laser treatments on your condition.
1. Steroid Injections and Cataracts: Steroid medications, particularly when used systemically (such as oral steroids or high-dose injections), have been associated with the development and progression of cataracts. This is particularly true for corticosteroids, which can lead to posterior subcapsular cataracts, a specific type of cataract that can significantly affect vision. The risk of cataract formation increases with the duration and dosage of steroid use. However, localized steroid injections (such as those administered for skin conditions) may have a lesser effect on cataract progression compared to systemic steroids. Nonetheless, it is essential to discuss your specific situation with your healthcare provider, as they can evaluate the dosage and frequency of your steroid injections and their potential impact on your eye health.
2. Dye Laser Treatments and Cataracts: Dye laser treatments, commonly used for skin conditions such as scars, typically do not have a direct effect on cataracts. These laser treatments work by targeting specific skin layers and are not known to influence the lens of the eye. However, it is crucial to ensure that during any laser treatment, proper eye protection is used to prevent accidental exposure to the laser, which could cause damage to the eyes. While dye lasers themselves are not associated with cataract progression, any procedure that involves the eyes or surrounding areas should be approached with caution, especially if you already have a pre-existing eye condition.
In summary, while steroid injections can potentially worsen cataracts, localized injections may pose a lower risk than systemic use. Dye laser treatments are generally not associated with cataract progression but should be performed with care to protect your eyes. It is advisable to have a thorough discussion with both your dermatologist and ophthalmologist regarding your treatments and any concerns about your cataracts. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history, the specifics of your treatments, and the current state of your eye health.
Additionally, maintaining regular eye examinations is crucial for monitoring the progression of cataracts and determining the appropriate time for potential surgical intervention if your vision becomes significantly impaired. If you notice any changes in your vision or experience new symptoms, be sure to report these to your eye care professional promptly.
