Nasal septum pressure may cause a metallic taste?
Hello doctor, whenever I apply pressure to my nasal septum, I can smell a metallic odor, but I don't see any blood (even when I wipe with a tissue, there's not a hint of red).
Sometimes when I pick my nose (without using my nails), I feel slight pressure on the nasal septum and then I notice the metallic smell.
What could be the reason for this? Is it possible that it could be related to some kind of cancer or tumor? Thank you, doctor!

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology
If symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist for endoscopic examination.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for your question regarding the unusual sensation of smelling iron when you press on your nasal septum. This phenomenon can be quite concerning, especially when it is accompanied by other symptoms or when it raises fears about serious conditions like tumors or cancers. However, let's explore the potential causes and provide some clarity.
The sensation of smelling iron, particularly when you apply pressure to your nasal septum, can be attributed to a few different factors. One of the most common explanations is related to the presence of blood or blood-like substances in the nasal passages. Even if you do not see any visible blood when you wipe your nose, there may be microscopic amounts that can trigger a metallic smell. This is because blood contains iron, and when it is present in the nasal cavity, it can create a distinct metallic odor.
Another possibility is that the pressure you are applying to your nasal septum may be stimulating the olfactory receptors in your nasal cavity. These receptors are responsible for detecting smells, and when they are activated in an unusual way—such as through pressure or irritation—they may send signals to your brain that are interpreted as specific smells, including that of iron.
Additionally, sinus issues, such as sinusitis or nasal polyps, can also lead to altered smell sensations. Inflammation or infection in the nasal passages can change the way smells are perceived, sometimes resulting in unusual or distorted olfactory experiences.
It's also worth noting that certain medications, allergies, or even dietary factors can influence your sense of smell. For instance, some medications can cause a metallic taste or smell as a side effect, and allergies can lead to nasal congestion, which may affect olfactory function.
Regarding your concern about serious conditions like tumors or cancers, while it is always prudent to be aware of any unusual symptoms, the presence of a metallic smell alone, especially without other alarming signs (such as significant nasal bleeding, persistent pain, or other systemic symptoms), is not typically indicative of cancer. However, if you have other symptoms or if this sensation persists, it would be wise to consult with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist for a thorough evaluation.
In conclusion, the metallic smell you are experiencing when pressing on your nasal septum is likely related to minor nasal irritation or the presence of blood, rather than a serious condition. However, if you have ongoing concerns or if the symptoms change, please seek medical advice for a proper assessment.
Take care, and I hope this information helps alleviate your concerns.
Best regards.
