Sudden blurriness in the right eye?

Hello Doctor: I experienced sudden blurriness in the outer part of my right eye when I got up from bed to turn off the light and then lay back down.
I tested by closing each eye and confirmed that the blurriness was only in the outer part of my right eye, as if it were covered by a cloth.
I can still see clearly in the central part of my right eye.
After a while, it returned to normal.
This has happened for the second time this week, and I would like to ask what factors might be causing this.
Thank you!

Xiao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/12/11

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology

Sudden blurriness in one eye can be concerning, especially when it occurs repeatedly, as you have described. There are several potential causes for this symptom, and understanding them can help you determine whether you need to seek medical attention.

1. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): One of the more serious concerns with sudden vision changes is a transient ischemic attack, often referred to as a "mini-stroke." TIAs can cause temporary vision loss or blurriness in one eye due to reduced blood flow to the brain. If you experience other symptoms such as weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, or severe headache, you should seek immediate medical attention.

2. Retinal Issues: Conditions affecting the retina, such as retinal detachment or retinal vein occlusion, can lead to sudden changes in vision. Retinal detachment often presents with symptoms like flashes of light, floaters, or a shadow over part of your vision. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to see an eye specialist promptly.

3. Optic Neuritis: This condition involves inflammation of the optic nerve and can cause sudden vision changes, including blurriness. It is often associated with multiple sclerosis but can occur in other contexts as well. Symptoms may include pain with eye movement and color vision changes.

4. Migraine Aura: Some individuals experience visual disturbances, known as aura, before or during a migraine headache. This can include blurriness, zigzag patterns, or temporary vision loss. If you have a history of migraines, this could be a possible explanation.

5. Dry Eye Syndrome: Sometimes, blurriness can result from dry eyes, especially if you have been in a dry environment or have not blinked enough (for example, while using screens). This is usually temporary and can be relieved with artificial tears.

6. Corneal Issues: Conditions affecting the cornea, such as corneal abrasions or infections, can also lead to sudden blurriness. If you have experienced any trauma to the eye or have symptoms like redness or pain, you should see an eye doctor.

7. Systemic Conditions: Certain systemic conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, can affect your vision. If you have a history of these conditions, it is essential to manage them properly, as they can lead to complications affecting your eyes.

Given that you have experienced this blurriness multiple times, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination, including checking your visual acuity, assessing your eye health, and possibly conducting imaging studies if necessary. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially if there is a risk of more serious underlying conditions.

In summary, while there are several benign explanations for sudden blurriness in one eye, it is essential to rule out more serious conditions. Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience and seek medical attention if the blurriness persists or worsens. Your eye health is vital, and timely intervention can help prevent potential complications.
