When will menstruation occur after a medical abortion?

Hello, I took RU486 on November 3rd, and I started bleeding on November 5th, during which I likely passed blood clots.
During my follow-up ultrasound on November 10th, it was confirmed that the embryo had been expelled.
I was prescribed uterotonics, which I took from November 11th to November 14th.
After November 20th, I stopped bleeding, and during my follow-up on November 24th, the pregnancy test showed only one line.

I would like to know if the ovulation period should be calculated starting from the 24th or the 20th.
I had intercourse on November 26th-27th and again on December 3rd-4th, but there was no ejaculation.
As of December 13th, my menstrual period has not yet arrived.
What is the likelihood of pregnancy? Is it advisable to conceive again shortly after a miscarriage? Additionally, should I calculate my menstrual cycle starting from November 20th when I stopped bleeding, or from November 5th when I started bleeding, for one to one and a half months? Thank you.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/12/13

After a medical abortion, the first menstrual period may become irregular, making it difficult to calculate the safe period.
It is recommended to use condoms for contraception during sexual intercourse.
If pregnancy occurs, it is advisable to visit a nearby obstetrics and gynecology clinic for a physician to assess whether there are any abnormalities in fetal development and to discuss the possibility of terminating the pregnancy.

After a medical abortion, the timeline for the return of your menstrual period can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, it is expected that your menstrual cycle will resume within four to six weeks after the procedure. However, several factors can influence this timeline, including individual hormonal levels, the timing of ovulation, and how your body responds to the abortion.

In your case, you took RU486 on November 3, and bleeding began on November 5, which is typical as it indicates the process is starting. You mentioned that you had a follow-up ultrasound on November 10, confirming that the pregnancy had been expelled, and you were prescribed medication to help with uterine contractions, which you took until November 14. After November 20, you reported no further bleeding, and a pregnancy test on November 24 showed a negative result.

Regarding your question about ovulation, it is important to note that ovulation typically occurs about two weeks before your next expected period. Since you stopped bleeding on November 20, you could estimate that your ovulation might occur around December 4, assuming a regular cycle. However, if your cycle is irregular or if your body is still adjusting after the abortion, this could vary.

You mentioned having unprotected intercourse on November 26-27 and December 3-4. Given that you have not had your period by December 13, there is a possibility of pregnancy, although the likelihood may be lower due to the recent abortion. It is essential to remember that after an abortion, your body may take some time to regulate its hormonal levels, which can affect ovulation and the timing of your next period.

If your period does not arrive within a week or so, it would be advisable to take a home pregnancy test to confirm whether you might be pregnant again. If the test is positive, you should consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance.
As for the question of whether it is suitable to conceive again shortly after a medical abortion, it is generally recommended to wait until you have had at least one normal menstrual cycle before trying to conceive again. This allows your body to recover and can help in dating a potential pregnancy more accurately. However, many women do conceive shortly after an abortion without complications. It is crucial to discuss your specific situation with your healthcare provider, who can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current circumstances.

In summary, while it is possible for your period to return within four to six weeks post-abortion, individual experiences can vary. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle, potential pregnancy, or your overall health after the abortion, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for support and guidance.
