Blood pressure issues
Hello Dr.
Tsai: During the summer, my blood pressure was around 120-135/70-85.
Recently, with the cold weather, I suddenly thought to check my blood pressure and found it spiking to 140-150/85-101.
However, in the morning, my blood pressure is usually around 12x/8x, while in the evening, it spikes to 14x/9x.
I tend to get anxious and check my blood pressure frequently; sometimes it is high, and other times it is normal, leading to significant fluctuations.
Is this variation in blood pressure related to the weather, or is there an issue with my health?

Understanding blood pressure fluctuations can be complex, especially when considering various factors such as weather changes, emotional stress, and underlying health conditions. In your case, it seems that you are experiencing significant variations in your blood pressure readings, particularly with the colder weather.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that blood pressure can naturally fluctuate throughout the day and can be influenced by a variety of factors. For instance, the body’s response to temperature changes is well-documented. Cold weather can cause blood vessels to constrict, which may lead to an increase in blood pressure. This is a physiological response as the body tries to maintain its core temperature and ensure adequate blood flow to vital organs. Conversely, warmer weather typically allows blood vessels to dilate, potentially leading to lower blood pressure readings.
In your situation, the increase in blood pressure readings from 120-135/70-85 to 140-150/85-101 during colder weather could indeed be attributed to the effects of temperature. Additionally, the time of day can also play a role; blood pressure tends to be lower in the morning and can rise throughout the day, peaking in the late afternoon or evening. This diurnal variation is normal, but significant spikes, especially if they are accompanied by symptoms like anxiety or stress, warrant further investigation.
Your mention of feeling easily tense and frequently checking your blood pressure could also contribute to the fluctuations you are observing. Anxiety and stress can lead to temporary increases in blood pressure, a phenomenon often referred to as "white coat syndrome," where patients experience elevated readings in clinical settings or when they are anxious about their health. It’s essential to approach blood pressure monitoring with a calm mindset and to try to measure it at consistent times under similar conditions for the most accurate readings.
Given your family history of health issues, including diabetes and possibly hypertension, it is prudent to keep a close eye on your blood pressure. Regular monitoring and maintaining a healthy lifestyle—such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques—can help mitigate some of the fluctuations you are experiencing. If your blood pressure continues to be elevated, especially if you notice persistent readings above 140/90 mmHg, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation, including blood tests or an assessment of your cardiovascular health, to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while weather changes can influence blood pressure, it is also essential to consider emotional factors and lifestyle habits. Keeping a detailed log of your blood pressure readings, noting the time of day, weather conditions, and your emotional state can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. If you have ongoing concerns or if your blood pressure remains consistently high, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure that any potential health issues are addressed promptly.
