Unexplained swelling of the skin?
Doctor, recently I've been experiencing small bumps on my hands, feet, buttocks, and around my waist that resemble mosquito bites.
After a while, these bumps spread outwards and continue to swell.
They don't itch when I leave them alone, but they gradually enlarge.
However, when I scratch them, they become very itchy, and the swelling accelerates and itches even more.
Sometimes they are the size of small beans, and other times they are larger than a coin.
What should I do about this? What could these symptoms indicate? Should I see a dermatologist or another specialist for an examination?

More Info
Unexplained skin swelling can be concerning, especially when it manifests as small, raised bumps that resemble mosquito bites and can expand over time. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a form of urticaria, commonly known as hives. Hives can appear as raised, itchy welts on the skin and can vary in size from small bumps to larger plaques. They may not always itch when you are not scratching them, but scratching can lead to increased irritation and swelling.
Possible Causes
There are several potential causes for the symptoms you are experiencing:
1. Allergic Reactions: Hives can be triggered by allergens such as certain foods, medications, insect stings, or environmental factors like pollen or pet dander. If you have recently changed your diet or started new medications, consider whether these could be contributing factors.
2. Infections: Viral infections can sometimes lead to skin reactions, including hives. If you have had any recent illnesses, this could be a possibility.
3. Physical Triggers: Sometimes, physical factors such as pressure, temperature changes, or sunlight can provoke hives in sensitive individuals.
4. Chronic Conditions: In some cases, chronic urticaria can occur without a clear trigger, which can be frustrating and difficult to manage.
Symptoms to Monitor
In addition to the swelling and itching, keep an eye out for other symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition, such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
- Dizziness or fainting
- Symptoms that persist for an extended period or worsen over time
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention, as they may indicate anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.
When to See a Doctor
Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider, preferably a dermatologist, who specializes in skin conditions. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests to identify potential allergens or underlying conditions. If you are unable to see a dermatologist, consider visiting a general practitioner who can provide initial guidance and treatment options.
Potential Treatments
Treatment for hives typically includes:
- Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines can help relieve itching and reduce swelling. Medications such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin) may be effective.
- Avoiding Triggers: If you can identify any potential triggers, avoiding them can help prevent future outbreaks.
- Topical Treatments: In some cases, topical corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and itching.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Keeping a diary of your symptoms and any potential triggers can help you and your doctor identify patterns and manage your condition more effectively.
Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing may be indicative of hives or another skin condition. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime, consider using antihistamines to alleviate your symptoms and avoid scratching the affected areas to prevent further irritation. Remember to monitor your symptoms closely and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any severe reactions. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms promptly can lead to better outcomes.
