Deep oral ulcer?

Hello, I have had a mouth ulcer for about 6 days.
I have been applying oral ointment for 4 days, but today when I applied it, I noticed that the ulcer is quite deep.
The ulcer is located on the oral mucosa next to my lower wisdom tooth.
The area around the wound is slightly red, and the ulcer is approximately 0.3 cm in size.
When I applied the ointment to the deeper part of the ulcer and removed the cotton swab, there was a little bit of blood.

Normal oral ulcers typically heal gradually within one to two weeks.
During this period, maintaining oral hygiene is important, and applying oral ointments can help alleviate discomfort.

More Info

Dealing with a deep mouth ulcer, especially one located near a wisdom tooth, can be quite uncomfortable and concerning. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing this ulcer for about six days, and despite applying an oral ointment for four days, the ulcer appears to be deepening. The presence of slight redness around the ulcer and a small amount of bleeding when you touched it with a cotton swab indicates that the area is inflamed and possibly irritated.

Causes of Mouth Ulcers
Mouth ulcers, also known as aphthous ulcers, can arise from various causes. Here are some common factors that may contribute to the development of ulcers near the wisdom teeth:
1. Trauma or Injury: Often, ulcers can develop from accidental bites, irritation from dental appliances, or even from brushing too hard. If you have recently had dental work or if your wisdom teeth are erupting, this could lead to localized trauma.

2. Infection: Viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus, can cause painful ulcers in the mouth. Bacterial infections can also lead to ulceration, particularly if there is an existing dental issue.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin B12, folate, iron, and zinc, can contribute to the formation of mouth ulcers.

4. Stress and Hormonal Changes: Emotional stress and hormonal fluctuations can trigger the onset of ulcers in some individuals.

5. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or autoimmune disorders can manifest as recurrent mouth ulcers.

Remedies and Management
Here are some strategies you can employ to manage and treat your deep mouth ulcer:
1. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Keeping your mouth clean is crucial. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid harsh mouthwashes that may irritate the ulcer further. Rinse your mouth with a saline solution (a mixture of salt and warm water) to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

2. Topical Treatments: Continue using the oral ointment you have been applying. Over-the-counter topical anesthetics like benzocaine can help numb the area and reduce pain. Additionally, corticosteroid ointments can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy, acidic, or abrasive foods that can further irritate the ulcer. Opt for a soft diet that is easier to chew and swallow.

4. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, which can help in the healing process.

5. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort associated with the ulcer.

6. Consult a Dentist or Doctor: If the ulcer does not improve within a week, or if it worsens, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions or infections. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to determine the exact cause of persistent ulcers.

7. Consider Nutritional Assessment: If you suspect that nutritional deficiencies may be contributing to your ulcers, consider consulting a healthcare provider for a dietary assessment or supplementation.

Conclusion
While most mouth ulcers heal on their own within one to two weeks, persistent or deep ulcers warrant further investigation. Given your symptoms, it is advisable to monitor the ulcer closely and seek professional advice if it does not show signs of improvement. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding irritants are key steps in managing mouth ulcers effectively.
