Rash all over the body?
Hello, Doctor: I would like to inquire about a sudden sensitivity to heat that I have experienced since the day before yesterday.
Just walking up the stairs causes my body to heat up and my skin to itch.
I have developed light red rashes on my limbs, particularly at the base, where it is a solid patch of light red.
Since yesterday, I have also noticed similar rashes on the soles of my feet, which do not itch much but occasionally feel itchy.
There are also some areas on my torso with red rashes, especially near the collar.
Additionally, I have experienced slight pain when pressing on the lymph nodes in my armpits and groin, although this has improved today.
After visiting a family medicine clinic yesterday, the doctor prescribed oral corticosteroids for me to take after meals.
Initially, I thought my symptoms were due to contact dermatitis from a dirty washing machine in my rental unit or residue from laundry detergent used in the washing basin.
However, after taking my clothes to a laundromat for cleaning and starting the corticosteroid treatment today, the rash has not only persisted but seems to have increased in number, leading me to believe that it is unlikely to be caused by my clothing.
I would like to ask if there is a possibility of a viral or fungal infection.
Additionally, I have not had any sexual experience, let alone engage in high-risk behavior, so I believe sexually transmitted infections can be ruled out, but I am still somewhat concerned and would like to inquire further.

More Info
Understanding sudden skin rashes can be quite challenging, especially when symptoms appear abruptly and without a clear cause. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sudden sensitivity to heat, resulting in red rashes and itching, particularly in the extremities and trunk. This could potentially be a manifestation of several dermatological conditions, including heat rash, urticaria (hives), or even an allergic reaction.
Possible Causes
1. Heat Rash (Miliaria): This occurs when sweat ducts become blocked and sweat is trapped under the skin. It often manifests as small red bumps or blisters and can be itchy. Heat rash is common in hot, humid conditions and can occur after physical exertion, such as climbing stairs.
2. Urticaria (Hives): This is a skin reaction that results in itchy welts or hives. It can be triggered by various factors, including heat, stress, certain foods, medications, or infections. The fact that your symptoms worsen with heat suggests that this could be a possibility.
3. Allergic Reaction: If you have recently changed your laundry detergent or used a new soap, this could lead to contact dermatitis, which presents as red, itchy rashes. However, since you mentioned that you have already washed your clothes with a different detergent, this may be less likely.
4. Infections: While less common, viral or fungal infections can cause rashes. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it might be worth considering this possibility, especially if you notice other systemic symptoms like fever or malaise.
5. Lymphadenopathy: The tenderness in your lymph nodes (in the armpit and groin) could indicate an underlying infection or inflammatory process. This is something to monitor closely, especially if it persists or worsens.
Treatment Options
1. Corticosteroids: As prescribed by your physician, oral corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms. It’s essential to follow the dosage instructions carefully.
2. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines can help manage itching and reduce the severity of hives if that is indeed what you are experiencing.
3. Cool Compresses: Applying cool, damp cloths to the affected areas can provide relief from itching and reduce redness.
4. Avoid Triggers: If heat exacerbates your symptoms, try to stay cool and avoid strenuous activities that cause sweating. Wearing loose, breathable clothing can also help.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the appearance of new rashes, changes in itchiness, or any systemic symptoms like fever or fatigue. This information will be valuable for your healthcare provider.
When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If your symptoms do not improve with the current treatment, or if you notice any new symptoms such as fever, significant swelling, or if the rash spreads, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A dermatologist may be able to provide a more accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to heat sensitivity or an allergic reaction, it is essential to monitor your condition closely and follow up with your healthcare provider if necessary. They can help determine the underlying cause and ensure that you receive appropriate treatment.
