Is it possible to confirm that there is no pregnancy?

Hello doctor, my last sexual intercourse was on December 17.
I took a pregnancy test on December 28, and the result was negative.
On December 30, I had a blood test for B-hCG, which was <1.20.
Can this rule out the possibility of pregnancy?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/02

More Info

Based on the information provided, it appears that you have taken appropriate steps to determine whether or not you are pregnant. You mentioned that your last sexual encounter was on December 17, and you subsequently used a home pregnancy test on December 28, which returned a negative result. Additionally, you had a blood test for Beta-hCG (B-hCG) on December 30, which also indicated a level of <1.20.
In general, a negative home pregnancy test and a Beta-hCG level below 5 mIU/mL typically indicate that you are not pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Most home tests are quite accurate when used correctly, especially when taken after a missed period. Since your test was negative and your blood test confirmed a very low level of hCG, it is reasonable to conclude that you are not pregnant.

However, it is essential to consider a few factors:
1. Timing of Testing: The timing of your tests is crucial. Home pregnancy tests are most reliable when taken after a missed period. Since you tested on December 28, which is about 11 days after your last sexual encounter, it is within a reasonable timeframe to detect pregnancy if it had occurred.
2. Sensitivity of Tests: Different pregnancy tests have varying sensitivities to hCG. Most home tests can detect hCG levels as low as 20-25 mIU/mL. Your blood test result of <1.20 indicates that there is no significant hCG present, further supporting the conclusion that you are not pregnant.

3. Menstrual Cycle Considerations: If your menstrual cycle is regular, the absence of a period following your last sexual encounter could be concerning. However, stress, hormonal imbalances, or other factors can also lead to a delayed period. If your period does not arrive soon, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

4. Follow-Up: If you continue to experience symptoms of pregnancy (such as nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue) or if your period does not arrive, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional testing or evaluations to rule out any other underlying issues.

In summary, based on the negative home pregnancy test and the low Beta-hCG level, it is highly likely that you are not pregnant. However, if you have any lingering concerns or symptoms, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and further testing if necessary.
