Shortness of breath
I have been experiencing symptoms for two to three years, occurring several times a day without a specific pattern.
I feel short of breath and have a sensation of not getting enough air, which leads me to yawn to catch my breath.
Sometimes, I also feel unable to yawn.
After yawning multiple times, I start to feel small bubbles in my throat that keep coming up, which causes me to burp (this happens regardless of whether I have eaten).
Occasionally, I also become aware that it seems like I haven't been breathing (not during sleep).

Understanding shortness of breath can be quite complex, especially when symptoms persist over a long period, as you described. Your experience of shallow breathing, the need to yawn to catch your breath, and the sensation of bubbles in your throat can be indicative of several underlying issues.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that shortness of breath (dyspnea) can stem from both physical and psychological factors. Given that you have been experiencing these symptoms for two to three years, it is crucial to consider both aspects.
From a physiological standpoint, conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even allergies can lead to feelings of breathlessness. Since you mentioned having a history of mild asthma and nasal allergies, it’s possible that these conditions could be contributing to your current symptoms. Asthma can cause bronchial constriction, leading to difficulty in breathing and a sensation of not getting enough air. Allergies can also exacerbate respiratory issues, especially if you are exposed to allergens in your environment.
Another potential cause could be related to anxiety or panic disorders. Symptoms such as feeling like you are not breathing or needing to yawn to take a deep breath can be manifestations of anxiety. When under stress, the body can enter a fight-or-flight mode, which can lead to hyperventilation or shallow breathing. This can create a cycle where the sensation of not breathing properly increases anxiety, which in turn exacerbates the breathing difficulties.
The sensation of bubbles in your throat and the need to burp could also be linked to gastrointestinal issues, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux can irritate the throat and esophagus, leading to discomfort and the feeling of needing to clear your throat or burp. This can sometimes be mistaken for respiratory issues.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include pulmonary function tests to assess your lung capacity and function, allergy testing to identify potential triggers, and possibly a psychological evaluation to rule out anxiety disorders.
In the meantime, there are several strategies you can employ to help manage your symptoms. Practicing controlled breathing techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing or pursed-lip breathing, can help improve your breathing efficiency and reduce feelings of breathlessness. Engaging in regular physical activity, as tolerated, can also enhance lung function and overall well-being. Additionally, ensuring that you are in a well-ventilated environment and minimizing exposure to known allergens can help alleviate some of your symptoms.
In summary, while your symptoms of shortness of breath and related sensations can be distressing, they can arise from a combination of physical and psychological factors. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider is essential to determine the underlying causes and to develop an effective management plan tailored to your needs.
